A R Rahman - listen to "Water", I found it better than Guru in terms of both the composition & recording.

Oldies:

-Where do you go to my lovely?
-To Sir With Love
-House of the rising sun
-Roll over Beethoven
-Bring the wine my lady

Yes, who needs 12st century?

Interesting observation.

I have a few XRCD's [50 +] & I am not so sure if I really like them. They sound very very atrificial & overly tipped. I love the box & packing, but not the way the music is recorded.
They have a list price of US $'s 30/- +++ per piece. I would be ready to let them go @ Rs. 1000/- for selection & Rs. 900/- each if some one will pick up all.

Well, I thoroughly enjoyed this one!
I did a snap A/B of very familiar tracks such as Hotel California, Take it easy, life in the fast lane,of the XRCD vs the regular Cd & found the XRCD nearer what I imagine the live performance would be like.
Sorry, Bhagwan!

Do not be sorry - Kamal - it is OK.
I will come to your place on the 14th and listen to it then. Will get both the CD's. Regular & XRCD's.
I would like to visit your's and Doc's place on the 14th and 15th. If that is OK with you guys.

If there is any Indian Classical Concert during that period, I would appreciate it. Would love to attend with you guys.

Thanks.

My favourite of these is "Where do you go to my lovely?". Fantastic voice and lyrics. Really captivating. I have seen the movie "To Sir with love". That song is apt. Glad that you value quality over novelty

Diana Krall - The Girl in the other room

Captivating. Bhagwan should like this? It's a captivating recording with a great soundstage. Natural vocals and instruments. None of that synthesiser crap.

Kamal and Bhagwan, what's an XRCD? I don't know this technology. Only heard that SACDs sound better.

Stands for Xtra Resolution CD, a specialised mastering & pressing technique invented by JVC, resulting in, plz google wikipedia CDs which can be played on any CD Player, but with better resolution, dynamics etc as compared to normally produced CDs.
For more details plz google wikipedia.

I am not so sure, but I may be having most of her albums. I think DK looks better than she sings. I like Mary Black & Eva Cassidy a lot, my current female vocal 'flavour of the month' is Kari Bremns [Norway].

XRCD is a re-mastering technique. Patented by JVC. Just google it & you will know.

Personally, I do not find SACD to be BETTER than CD !!!

You should hear them;
Prithvi used to sell them a few years back. I had purchased my lot from him through Sound Smiths a few years back.
If you stay in Bangalore, maybe you could drop by & borrow a few and listen to them and then decide. If you stay in Bombay, I would surely lend a few to you. Do let me know how you are placed.

But, do listen and then decide if you like or dislike !!
That way you will have an opinion of your own;;;;

Sir, 1 small question, why do you download mp3 ? You can get Wave direct, the entire world of audio is there for 'free download' [torrents]
Ecen the entire XRCD Catalogue etc. is there - for the free taking.

BTW - Janis Ian too is a lovely singer. I do not have all her albums, but 4 of them I have are brilliant !! Good choice !!!

Just to add onto the xrcd posts..they are usually original Analogue master tapes played on restored equipment(like the original) which are then put through their own mastering process and then sent to manufacture.
Thats what makes them so interesting.

Dont know if they have started doing XRCD's of original digital masters also.

Some XRCD stuff I have heard is terrific.

To name a few
1) West side story - Andre Previn
2) Albeniz - Suite espanola
3) MJQ - Concorde
4) Pawnshop
5) Charade - Henry Mancini
6) Sarah Vaughan (cant remember the album)

Sir, allt he albums you mentioned are 're-issues'
JVC takes the old master tapes and works on it. The procedure is mentioned in the cover of the CD. The 2K Technology. The Remiyo DAC does the same thing. Sivat has 1 I think & Sound Smiths sells it in India.
You guys should try and audition it !!!

Picked up Raag Piloo By Ustad Vilayat Khan Ji,a SonyNavras release of the concert given by him at Princeton, 2001.
There was no lo bass.
The midbass was sometimes tightish sometimes bloatedish other times in between with smooth oscillations to & fro.
The lower midrange was balanced with the middlemidrange a bit forward except when it hit the upper midrange when it swiftly decayed to the middle of the upper midrange & the lower midrange,& the it moved forward & backward.
The upper reaches of the treble were light & airy such that they floated out of sight but then they quickly descended back & alternated between a smooth up& down movement and a somewhat muddy trnsition from side to side especially when the transient attack manifested it self all the way from the lower midbass transiting thru the mmid upper midrange to the middle ares of the lower mid treble.
And that concisely sums up a truly great performance.
Jai Audiophilese!!!

She was in Mumbai a fortnight back. Went for the show. Sadly, it turned out to be more of a pg 3 event than a musical one.
And while the food, drink (and other sights) were good, the performance wasn't up to the mark at all.

Thou shalt stoop to conquer.
I thought that V Mae would provide a great classical violin experience. But, well, she has 'stooped' to popular taste. Can't blame the poor pretty thing. He who pays the piper dictates the tune. And we audiophiles are too small a target audience for her.

Incidentally, if you guys had plopped the small change for her CD, you would have saved yourself the huge expense of attending her concert! If you have an Internet connection, do use YouTube to preview the artistes.

If you guys like violins, I would definitely recommend the works of Yehudi Menuhin. He knows exactly what he intends to achieve.
