Anyone else possessing this CD? After reading on this forum and on the web that this is a first CD to be acquired by jazz lovers, I got it.

I really can't believe what I missed all these years. My idea of a trumpet was the 'vicious' instrument played by wedding bands to make people deaf! Which is why, all this time, I stuck to pianists (Diana Krall, Herbie, Monk, and Norah Jones) and other safe jazz music.

I was truly shocked when I heard Flamenco Sketches, the last track on Miles Davis - Kind of Blue - Remasterd Gold CD. The trumpet, as played by Miles, is a phenomenally musical instrument - relaxing and conveying deep emotions . Anyone else who is prejudiced against the trumpet, do listen to this track and you will learn like me.

I do agree-
It takes a master to make you realise how great an instrument/any instrument can sound.....

don't believe i heard that particular track though we did listen to the first coupleform that album and a whole lot of others from different ones wehn we met up at Abhi's place.

I still feel his music is kinda too harsh for my ears( i strongly stress this point, so don't shoot me).
But, will give this a shot...

oh yes! this is a mind-blowing ablum. I have the re-issue 180gm LP from Classic records. Totally amazing!
if you want to hear some great trumpeting get some albums from Louis Armstrong, Freddie Hubbard, Hugh Masekela, Chet Baker to name just a few superb artists.
The trumpet is a brass instrument & it's designed to be harsh when played loud. If your system softens the harshness, then, you need some tweaks to fix that. However, like Kamal wrote, a master trumpeter can make this instrument sound very delicate.
Enjoy "kind of blue".

Wynton Marsalis: A guy who really enjoys his trumpet. There's a duet with Dianne Reeves called "feeling of jazz" where Wynton just lets go, man. You guys should heear it if you can! One of my fav demo tracks!

Sachi,
Do note that I said that 'Flamenco Sketches' is soothing (like country music), not all of Miles Davis' pieces. Also, I listened to it on my friend's 25-yr old DIY speakers driven by a 40W Proton stereo amp. Quite possibly, this setup has reduced dynamics and softens the peaks. But, its 12" drivers offer unbelievable bass. There's a lot more on "Kind of Blue' than Miles' trumpet.

Thanks for the suggestions guys:
Besides Miles Davis, other master trumpeters are:
1 Louis Armstrong
2 Freddie Hubbard
3 Hugh Masekela
4 Chet Baker
5 Wynton Marsalis

Do add to this list. The trumpet is a much ignored instrument.

Yes Kamal, a master can turn an otherwise 'harsh' instrument' into a thing that can produce great beauty.

Is it true that horn speakers reproduce trumpets best, because a trumpet is a 'horn' instrument?

Not necessarily,IMHO.
A HiFi setup would reproduce all the delicate nuances, all the under/overtones/all the harmonics/the essential TIMBRE of the instrument-thats why its labelled as HiFi.

... and it takes a wedding to kill the music out

BTW I heard "Time after Time" by Miles Davis - a very pleasant & "soothing" music with not a grain of harshness.

I also bought the CD yesterday - really great album. It was a pack of 3 albums:

-Kind of Blue
-Porgy & Bees
-Sketched of Spain

I'm still to listen to the last 2.

A book from Penguin "Jazz of CD" rates "Kind of Blue" the best album of Miles.

Neutral,
I have all 3 albums & they are all fantastic. I like them in the order of Kind of Blue, Sketches of Spain & Porgy & Bess. Each album is a classic in its own right.
if you do not possess these albums as yet, do buy them!

Belive it or not. Last month I went for a concert as part of some Jaipur Jamboori festival thats been going on, and what did I hear? A wedding band playing Jazz influenced music. What were they playing? Bits from kind of blue. Believe me its true! (I gathered that they had a band leader who had married a french woman and thus had gotten exposed to world music culture) Actually they had concocted some kitsch which had Rajasthani folk elements and Jazz and ofcourse the filmi blast. Nobody was paying much attention to them , becaue they were a side act, but I listened and returned very happy inside. Some day, let us pray to God, one of these poor street musician (and thats what they are) will produce a Louis Armstrong. Why does Indian poplur music produce vulgarity and little else, after all Jazz was begat in the brothels and speakeasys.

You can see lot of Jazz influence in R D Burman music in moveis like Sagar, Sanam Teri Kasam, etc.

Yes there is an influence, although its an old-fashioned kind of club jazz. More recently we have seen african and latin influences in popular filmi music. However my experience of contemporary pop is limited to what I overhear my children listening to, perhaps there is jazz also. Then ofcourse there is we might call 'NGO music' like Indian Ocean, which could possibly lead to a new genre.
