Rip the DVD and encode into 700MB DIVX/XVID files. Keep the source audio, don't tamper with it. You'll get exactly what you are looking for. A DVD of a typical movie can be compressed into 1.4GB that way with the full quality AC3 sound still there.

Thanks reign,

I haven't ripped a DVD yet. so could you tell me any specific software that i can use and is there any option on setting the compression ratio while ripping DVD's ????

I have downloaded a few clippings which is a part of DTS-Dolby-THX demo DVD. The download consists of the files with .vob, .ifo. & .bup extensions. Which i guess are the file extension of data stored on a DVD.

The file sizes are between 4 mb to 420 mb. so any idea how can i encode them onto a normal CD with all sound effects intact.

Why i am asking this is becoz i dont have a DVD writer drive and am not planning to invest in one for the time being. So just finding an alternate route (if any)???

Use something like virtualdub (vob/mpeg2 version. it also has an avi version) and encode to DivX/xvid. Virtualdub is really easy to use and allows crazy amount of options. Also make sure you have divx/xvid codec installed on ur system before you begin encoding.

Hi,

so i will have to convert it to divx / xvid inorder to copy it to the CD.

But cant i encode the original .vob,.ifo & .bup file directly onto the CD and play it in the DVD player ???

Will it work ???

I hope u are getting my point.

In this case you probably can but in general the VOB files would be too big to fit on a CD :). Does your DVD player support MPEG-4?

Can you tell me what is MPEG-4 (Ah !!! my ignorance to media standards )

Regarding file size as i said they are small clipping usually used for demo purposes. The file sizes which i have range 4 to 420 mb. It is not necessary that i will use all the files. even if i am able to get 4 to 5 clips in one CD that will work.

my DVD player doesnt not support - DIVX & SACD. DVD-Audio i dont know. Rest all medias/formats it does.

MPEG4 means all these divx/xvid/wmv/h.264 etc formats. If it doesn't support divx then full movies won't work. Since you already have the vob files and the size is smaller than 1 cd, i think you can just create a pseudo dvd using nero. Can't say for certain but should be possible.

I am Not sure this will work.

A DVD has a launch page, from where you select the Movie or highlights or whatever.

I dont think you will be able to select which of the 5 multiple clips you have on yr CD, without such an intitial page.

Maybe if you put 1 Big file (only) on yr pseudo DVD, the DVD player will play it....

But then again you say that your DVD player does not support DIVX. Then, I guess you have No Chance of playing a DIVX encoded CD in it ...

The DIVX is procedde In the Player, in real time...

Can you tell me what is MPEG-4

MPEG : Moving Pictures Expert Group was formed to set up standards for Video Compression.

Incidentally, JPEG was the Joint Picture Expert Group, set up to establish compression standards for Fixed pictures, such as Bank account signatures (single colour) and mug-shots :-) of the account holders (multiple Colour).

MPEG 1 was their first standard about a decade ago. the MPEG-1 standard was fo Video CDs ( VCDs) and provided what was then acceptable commercial quality ... on par with a VHS video cassette.
MPEG-1 fits a full length movie on a CD (700 MB)

MPEG-2 Offers FAR more video compression and is used in all DVDs as well as 90% of TV transmissions from Satellites.
MPEG-2 provides 'High' quality video & HiFi sound for an entire movie on a DVD disk ( approx 4.7 GB )

MPEG-4 is the latest compression standard. Provides Very high compression.

All Satellite HD TV transmissions use MPEG-4.

MPEG-4 also makes IPTV possible.

I have read that ( ! ) MPEG-4 can squeeeze a HD TV movie into 1 GB... ie about the space on a CD ! Phew..

Incidentally, mp-3 is Not MPEG-3

Complete HD movies into 1GB? No way :P. SD Movies are possible but definitely not HD. Otherwise there'd be no reason for existence of HD-DVD and Bluray :). You can get HD samples in mpeg4 over here:

http://www.microsoft...contentshowcase.aspx

You need a really high end CPU and 128MB Video memory to play it properly at 1080p with no jerkiness... In fact the current HD-DVD players actually have a P4 2.8GHz CPU with a gig of ram :KR. The quality of video is incredible though... especially if you have a widescreen display.

Maybe if you get a DVD cutter, you could split the movie across CDs

If you are making a DIVX disc, your player MUST be capable of playing back DIVX.

1. I agree with you.... 1 GB for a compressed HD Movie seems ambitious... today...

Cutting edge work on SD (Standard Def) & HD (High Def) compression is currently being driven by IP TV, where bandwidth is at an Absolute premium.

Tandberg IP TV encoders today promise 720p HD at just 1 MBps ! I guess corners are cut in terms of error compression, sability etc, for the ultimate spec-manship..

2. That brings up the issue of " What IS HD TV ??? "

720p ? 1080p ?

The term HD TV already seems as ambigoius as the Watts of Music power....

3.

Otherwise there'd be no reason for existence of HD-DVD and Bluray.

The Blue Ray format store 50GB ( dual layer) on a single disc. This is More than enough to prodive a HD TV movie, without using MPEG-4.

Both - Blue Ray and HD-DVD support & playback :

MPEG-2
MPEG-4 AVC
SMPTE VC-1

Which format will be used on a particular HD disc will depend on the movie studio...

4. Incidentally, the new Sony Laptops with Blue Ray dics drives Dont play Blue Ray HD movie... they can only use the blue Ray Discs to support data !

SONY is mumbling something about copyright protection for this short-comming ...

hi ,

the think that i was looking for worked. Here's how:

I selected 8 DVD clips (.vob files) with a total size of 325 MB. Joined them using vobedit.exe, created the necessary IFO files using ifoedit.exe and then created the image file using IMG tool classic.

The final image file was double the size (652 MB) of the original files.

I wrote the image file using Nero onto a blank CD-R. I wrote the image at a speed of 4X (600 kbps). it was successfull.

i tried to view the contents of the disc on my PC but it didn't show me anything, but in the disc information of Nero it showed that the full capacity of the disc had been utilized.

i played the disc on my DVD player it worked. my avr recognized the dolby digital encoded sounds.

But there was one problem. the images & sound were jerky.

Now my queries this time are:

1) why is the images/sounds jerky ?
2) is the data transfer rates different for CD & DVD media?
3) does the burning of data at low speeds has something to do with it? which i think shouldnt be a reason.

Waiting for a reply for you guys.

DVD 1x is approx equal to CD 9x speed.

I guess that is why you are facing problems with jerky Video & data.

Burning data at a slower rate certainly cant cause any harm ... IMHO.

Otherwise, you seem better informed than me in this whole matter.

U are a FAST learner !

Cheers

Hi,

My latest discovery.

I tried playing the CD which i created on my friends DVD player (Philips DVP642K) and guess what ..... i played without any hitch & jerk.

Now i have zeroed upon my DVD player, i think it is the culprit here. I have an Onida DFX-5100P.

Any views on this one ?????
