I am planning to order few DVDs from amazon. I am worried it may be caught up in customs. Could someone please throw some light on this? Has anyone faced any issues with shipping/delivery?

Thanks in Advance

Hello !

I have ordered many CD's in the past from various web sites;

CD Now + CD Universe + Elusive Disc + Telarc + Reference Recordings + Waterlilly Acoustics etc.

Each time they have come in safely.
However, I have resticted my order to 7/8 cd's per order.

Never called for DVD's.

THey should not be a problem, however, I am not aware of any copy right issues that may crop up.

But give it a try. Just ensure that the region is OK with you [India]

Thanks BOB!
Well, I decided to take the chance and order the DVDs. However, as I was ordering there was this huge notice that popped up.

Please note: Your order contains at least one Region 1 (Canada and U.S.) encoded DVD. Region 1 DVDs might not play in DVD players sold in the country where this order is being shipped. Please also note that some Region 1 DVDs contain a Regional Coding Enhancement. Some of our international customers have had problems playing these enhanced discs on their “region-free” DVD players. Learn more about DVD region encoding and formats. To modify your order, edit the quantities below.

Does any one know about the "Region coding enhancement?" I thought a region free dvd player should suffice. Is this something new?

Kavish,

Most DVD players block a region using a code and it is very easy to unlock it to make it a region free player. But that depends on which player you have. If you have one of those regular players like Samsung, LG etc. just ask your dealer on how to make it region free. If they are the high-end ones like Bose, Marantz etc. the dealer may not agree to unlock it for you...

Internet Dear Sir will solve this problem.

Just go to google & type your make & model number followed by region free crack & voila !!! the code will come up;

It will be sequence of numbers that have to be pressed on the remote control. This will unlock the player for you.

Just give it a shot !!

well, making a player region free is pretty easy and hacks are available on the internet as Bob mentioned, but what I was surprised is the quote by amazon,

"Some of our international customers have had problems playing these enhanced discs on their “region-free” DVD players"

Does that mean there is something more than just making it region-free?

I have had to pay custom duty on both CDs and DVDs on orders amounting to $ 100, however this has been in the region of about 600/700 Inr.

I personally do not have a problem with this, as the stuff that I order is not, and will never be available locally.

However, I also know of people who have not had to pay customs duty as well.

If you have an entry level DVD player, the chances are that it is region free. That pop-up on Amazon, appears more as a legal thingie than anything else.

If the order amount is less than $100, (say 30-40 $) then do I need to pay customs? Is there a well defined limit?

Hi,

The limit for customs free import to Germany is 22 €. For every amount above that customs and VAT can be charged ( as a matter of fact the shipping-rate can be added to the value of the goods, which makes it very hard not to reach the critical sum).

I learned that charging is actually more or less coincidental, though. There's obviously such a great mass of privately imported goods, that it is impossible to charge the fee for every single package. i usually only buy used records from Ebay USA ( and don't think they wouldn't want the VAT ) and I'd say that around every 5th or 6th parcel or so gets stuck ( sometimes with only one record in it, usually I don't have to pay then, but it's pretty annoying to have to travel to the customs bureau every time to talk it out of them )

My exprience tells me, it's better if the sender uses normal post services such as USPS in the States. It can also be useful, if an amount lower than the actual value is declared on the customs sticker. Parcels declared as gift get stuck more often, for the customs stuff already knows the tricks. So it should be not too much, not too little ( as a matter of fact it's probably not possible to negotiate something like that with Amazon ).

Express services such as Fed-Ex usually charge a fee for declaring customs for the consignee (i.e. if the value is not above 100 € or so ). You don't have to appear at the customs bureau then, but will get an invoive from the delivering party.

Though it's a bit stressy sometimes, I would not quit buying the goodies from US sellers. Even if customs have to be paid, it's usually worth it. A lot of the things I can get there are just not available here, at least not for reasonable prices. That keeps me hanging on.

Best regards,

Klaus

Oops.

I realized that you're probably talking about importing DVD's to India, don't you ?

Well, actually I must admit that I don't know anything about that. That's the internet: Sometimes you just don't know where the other users are located.

Just wanted to add my 2 cents... I too have ordered stuff from Amazon.com over the last few years. I have never exceeded $100 in value and have received the goods at my door in good condition. I have ordered DVDs and Audio CDs. However when I made the mistake of ordering a set of Linux CDs (ironically only $2.99 or so in value) I received the usual Foreign Post Office notice asking me to "provide documents" to justify importing the goods. I have had one nightmarish experience with the utterly rude and corrupt folks there in the past (ordered a Video Card in the '90s as a naive college student) so thankfully I had the help of a relative who heads an Import/Export business. He saw to it that my order was released without any palms being greased or harrassment.

Ever since that I had stopped ordering CDs but your experiences are encouraging and I assume the FPO does not care about non-software discs.

As a parting thought, have you noticed the thick brown tape on the packages you receive from Amazon.com? Well, that's the FPO at work. They tear open every package and inspect the contents thoroughly. While waiting for my parcel to be released I amused myself watching them at work. The room is filled with wooden desks and the good people working there go through every book, every cassette -- not sure what they expect to find. "Handle with care" is a phrase that is surely missing from their guidelines because all the packages are treated with the gentleness of a pack mule.
