Hi Guys,
I am looking to buy a 29 inch base model tv. I went to a dealer and watched panasonic, samsung and LG brands side by side.Somehow i was impressed by the panny. It had less grains than the other two and colour combination looked smooth. Samsung & LG had gaudy colours. Any suggestions?
Any reason not to go for the panny guys?
Thanks,
cheers,
shri

PS: I am not particular abt the tv sound as i have a marantz amp which i will be connectiong to my tv.

Do play around with the Colour, Brightness & Contrast settings of each TV, to get the optimum picture on each TV set..... Before making a comparision.

Dealers often dont set up each TV optimally, either because 1. They dont care
2. Customers Dont care or / and each customer has a different preference.... Garish often being the order of the day.
3. The dealer wants to push a certain brand, because it offers an attractive dealer scheme like a trip to Spore !

Also, Do NOT set all TVs with equal settings, like 50% for colour, brightness and contrast.

Some brands like Akai & Sansui also have an attractive feature ... Price !

Rs 16K for a 29 inch...

i would say Phillips..
try the entry level digital models with progressive scan..
I was so impressed i bought another one.
And after sales support is top notch.
I happened to blow my TV's chip and they flew one dwn from Pune and fixed it up as good as new.

They are just brilliant.

Howz the Sony Wega compared to the Philips?

Garish Colurs (SONY) vs Natural Colours (Philips)

Should we buy HDTV compatible to remain future proof?

Glad you brought that up.....

There are, Im told on last count, more than 30 HDTV 'Standards.'

Most TVs support less than Half these.

Which one do U want to back, to make your TV 'Future Proof' ?

Cud we have more reviews on Sony vs Philips?

Amp_Nut, which brand TV (preferably which model), is the best "future proof"?

phillips beats sony wega hands down..
at lest the entry models..
i haven't compared the high end ones..
bu tby far the best picture i have seen on a CRT was on a 90k 29" Sony.
The picture quality was way way better than i had seen on any LCD or plasma.

Saachi, now I am in a real dilemma! :-)

I want a 29" CRT for my HT. and I had planned on the Sony Wega thinkin' the decision wud be unanimous....

What difference did u observe in the Entry Level vs High-End Models? I mean, does the picture clarity differ?
(I had seen the entry level Sonys and there was too much 'pixellation', but the high end ones, were crystal clear even at the nearfield)

Which is the 90k model u had seen?

Hi Savyasachi,

Can u tell me the model number of the philips u bought plss? Because the entry level 29 inch Philips doesent have proggressive scan. The model which has both proggressive scan and HD ready costs nearly 29k.Does proggressive component in makes a lot of difference while watching DVDs? The above mentioned model has proggessive component in.The entry level Philips has only interlaced component in i beleive.
Thanks,
cheers,
Shri

Hi,

Just copying my post from another thread on our forum, running similtanously .... same topic, fragmented ?

******************

My 2 bit:

1. Use your eyes.

2. Crystalise your budget. If it is large, do you want a plasma or a CRT based TV ?

3. What does HDTV mean to you ?

There is ZERO HDTV software currently available in India, and HDTV DTH transmissions are also ATLEAST 2 years away.

Blue Ray and its competitors are just getting into the ring.

Do you want to pay 'First Adopter' premiums, without even being able to see / use HDTV ? Currently, your only practical NEAR HDTV source would be Upscaling DVD players, which are a stop gap arrangement.

4. HDTV will probably become mainstream with the 2008 Beijing olympics.

By then, HDTV Plasma / LCD panels will probably be 50% of their current price.

Maybe the rational decision would be to wait it out for 2 years, and buy a stop gap TV till then ?

All I can tell you is to come out SONY mania what rest are into.. they charge you good 50% more than other brands and no great features - sick crap.. Look for Philips they know about TV's and SONY Wega is all hype..it's shit.. thooo.
Korean brands are much better

Hi srikarv,

The one i bought was i think PT-8321 or someting like that.
It was a 100Hz digital TV with component progressive scanning at 480P(but sometimes depending on the software it shows 576P).

I paid around 31k.
Easily the best TV in that range.
In fact my friend bought a Sony ..entry one cost around the same as mine but i feel that the Phillips beats it hands down.
The black levels is probably the best u can get in this price range and also the contrast ratio is extremely good.
You will be amazed by the qualkity of the picture from this TV.

I compared the panny too at theat time..don't know the model but phillips just kept drawing my eye.

Regarding the Sony top end model one..hmmm i didn't enquire abt the model no but i think they must have it on Denmo in the Rajajinagar Sony World.
Incidentally, a Phillips arena is just next door..so u can make an almost AB if u happen to be in Bangalore.

hi shri,
I use the 29" panasonic tau-
bot it in jan '05 for 23k , mrp was 26k then-
am sure now it's gonna be cheaper-
even i had gone to the store thinking wegas are the best,
they are if u pay 3 times the price.
wegas at this range suck, i did check this one besides LG, samsung etc-
also i liked the black border besides the screen which the "costly wega" had. it mostly makes the picture soothing- now u do get the same design in all the brands-

The panasonic has one of the best pciture quality i have seen, (not on teleserials though) , plug a dvd player through the component and it its delightful.
The sound maybe a little muffled when you listen to tv broadcasts particularly when the transmission is not good (which is true in my case :-( )

I dont know about the philips one , the panasonic one is around 17k and it is a decent buy at that price

Hi,

Thanks to anirvan and sanathan I am sure i want to go for the Panny. Guys i am getting the Tau for 16.5k and if i can get Rs 1500 for the 14 inch panny i will be exchanging, it may cost me a mere 15k.I think its a good bargain.I am in Chennai and I use a set top box for cable television. And I would be connecting the TV to my Marantz amp. So the television brodcast and as well as the sound wouldnt be a problem. Anirvan and sanathan say DVD 'S look great thro component. So what else one want at this price range?

Thanks a lot guys for all ur suggestions. I will be posting my views once i get the Panny home in a week's time.
Cheers,
Shri

Nice pic, Anirvan.

Trust you do Completely remove the cloth from Over the TV, when its switched on, and till it cools down, after switch off.

A cloth over it will cause heat build up, and lower component life.... eventually doing more harm than dust settling in .....

Hi,

One more reason for me to go for the Panny.....

This is the opinion of one of the reviewers on Audioholics,

' But the Sony seemed like looking through a window that was a little dirty, sort of a slight haze over the picture. The Panasonic looked as if you had just cleaned both sides of the window on a bright spring day.'

Shri

PS: Thanks for the nice pic anirvan... and one more q to u..

Does this tv support 16:9 aspect ratio?
