Hi Everyone !

I am writing this not to scare you but just to caution you.

Prolonged exposure to sound above 90 dB can induce loss of hearing. This first appears as a dip at 4000 Hz, which means that the sensitivity of the ears is reduced for frequency of 4000 Hz.

So go easy on your ears - use "soft clipping"

I have persuaded my wife, who is an Ear Surgeon, to write an article on hearing for the audiophiles. Soon you will get some more information on this.

Happy Hearing

Beethoven & Mozart were seriously hearing impaired. Even Sting has a certain degree of hearing loss (learnt from a news daily).

So guys lower the volume please

Hi Doc,

Inability to hear well at 4000hz seems to be a foregone conclusion for most of us.

Now, how about finding a way of ensuring that your significant other’s vocal chords favour operating only at this frequency…

They can go so down below 20 Hz that you can't hear, and so high above 20 KHz which is beyond your comprehension. And, especially when they talk to their own species, they do so outside this audible spectrum.

Sanjay

PS - Ideal couple is deaf man married to a blind woman.

Doc,

While I am all for introducing our better halves to the pleasures of hi-fi, I sincerely hope none of you gentlemen ever let them know of the existence of these fora.

Don’t think we would be left with any audible spectrum whatsoever…

I read a fairly well-researched article once (don't remember where) that said the biggest culprit for hearing damage among music-listeners would be earphones playing music at high volume. Car speakers at high volume are nearly as bad. Earmuff-type headphones are a better option than earphones which are placed directly into the external auditory canal. From my personal experience, wearing earphones long hours have proved quite painful. I've stopped using them altogether.

Tower speakers in a medium-large listening area (eg. a hall) at a comfortable volume cause absolutely no damage to the ears.

Fortunately, I have no significant other... and probably the chap that wrote the article I'm referring to doesn't have one either! As big-ears pointed out, could they be the biggest cause of hearing loss ever? lol
