Multimedia storage and playback (audio, vcd, dvd)

Hi all,

A friend is looking for a storage device that stores audio/video, streaming and playback via av recvr.
Cheap and cheerfull reccomendations please.

The currrent options were western digital media player, xtreamer, viewlab.

Other options ?

Or is a laptop/computer a better deal. If so. Then what's the best way to do multichannel dvd storage and playback ?

i have an xtremer and a WD live. Kids operate it to watch their movies.

In my case xtremer is preferred as over and above the usual commn stuff, xtremer can house an internal HDD (so no need to USB external). it also can be a wireless networked server with an optional antenna.

both have an HDMI out/digi/AV out out to connect to any receiver

How would you rate the audio/video quality ? And digital output, I believ there is only optical digital out ?

How are the analogue outs ?

Video quality is stellar. Almost as good as it gets for a consumer device barring the ones that use an abt1020 chip. Never tried analog audio. You can get digital audio either off hdmi or optical out. Do be aware it doesnt pass thru the new dolby truehd and dts master. normal dolby digital and dts works just fine. .

Manek, ROC above is the expert..video quality looks ok on a 37 LCD not sure of others (even VCD rips, BD rips look fantastic)
regarding audio..i use HDMI for both on to my TV (and the TV out to my HT).. its obviously not great..but kids dont care
