ATI and nVidia crush high-end DVD players

Until recently the most important reasons for purchasing a certain graphics card was either image quality or speed in 3D games. Nowadays the PC finds its way to the lounge and is used more and more as a multimedia centre. Because of this change in usage the quality of playing movies and video files is becoming an important factor in choosing a graphics card to power your system. Both ATI and nVidia have invested a lot of time and money in developing their video technology, and both claim to be able to produce the best quality. We found this a perfect reason to compare not only ATI’s Avivo and nVidia’s PureVideo, but also 12 stand alone DVD players, varying in price between $ 200 and more than $ 2000. We try to answer the question which is best for your new LCD television, a top of the range DVD player or a PC?

The total score for nVidia ends up being 93, where the total ATI score is 118. Both scores are extremely high, considering the score of the most best performing DVD player we tested (the Marantz DV6600) was only 63. The majority of the standalone players we used did not score more than 40 points in the test. The most expensive ones, the Denon DVD-3910 and Marantz DV9600 scored only 58 and 61 points.

A real eye opener !

But in all fairness, the graphics card needs atleast a US $ 500 PC to operate !

I think the same thing applies to the PC Monitor also, which displays pictures in a non-interlaced format i.e. in high-definition (if i am not wrong).

In that case buying a large screen PC monitor will be a bargain as compared to the LCD/Plasma screens ??

The largest I know of is Dell's 30" monster. But for LCDs, I think the cost is on par with commercial models.

PC Monitors do not need to be optimised for moving pictures. Hence they often have a poor response time, that can cause blurring or pixelisation on the edge.

A response time of 8 milli seconds (8ms) is considered to be the BARE minimum for TV use.

Most good PC displays today just about claim 8 ms.

Ditto for Data Projectors. Thety are often half the price of Home Theatre Projectors...
