DVD players with DD /DTS decoders

There are DVD players from Philips, Onida etc. that come with inbuilt DD/ DTS decoders and 5.1 output to be used with external multichannel amplifiers. How do these decoders compare in performance terms with those in entry level AV receivers of Yamaha , Onkyo etc. Any opinions. Thanks.

IMO, you can check the HTIB's offered by philips etc to guage their performance. They are not at all upto the mark. (in fact they are terrible

) That's a result of trying to club in too many things into one package at a low cost. so it will always be a compromise. Ofcourse the amp is a biggest compromise.

If you are on a strict budget (very strict budget), you can check out some 5.1 speakers, torvin has a 5.1 speaker package which takes 5.1 channel input...I think its called minimax. I havent heard them, but torvin speakers are very good for the price. so it shouldnt disappoint. In all you can get a speaker+dvd player for around 10K which will be better than a low cost HTIB.

I am trying to evaluate only the decoder performance of DVD players with those in AV receivers. I agree that most HTiBs especially low end ones may not sound good. But are the DD/DTS processors in such players/ HtiBs weaker in terms of performance compared to those on AV receivers. If these processors are as good then I am thinking of getting a DVD player with onboard DD/DTS and connecting it to a multi channel amplifier instead of buying an AV receiver.
