Hi guys!

My first post on this forum. I am truly impressed by the amount of info available here.

I am looking for a HT system for a 22X10 room and have listened to a few systems here in delhi (must tell u, sorry state of affairs as far as electronics are concerned in delhi! not one multi-brand showroom!)

So i have a few queries

[1] Is there a multi-brand showroom in delhi where i can compare different systems?!

[2] How is the Onkyo HT-S990THX system? I am getting it for 66K here and its the most impressive i have heard so far!

Other systems i have heard are
Marantz-SR4001 w/ Jamo A340 speakers
Marantz-SR3001 w/ Jamo S406 speakers (5.1)
Denon 1507 w/ Jamo S606 speakers (5.1) [this sounded the best of the 3 to me)

What do u guys think? Is the onkyo system good enuff? or should i hunt for components.
I am planning to test the Sonodyne pre-power series with sonodyne sonus 2605 speakers and a 200W Jamo amp in a couple of days.

The budget i have is about 1-1.2 L

one last thing
[3] What CDS/Movie/Music is best to test. I have been testing hotel california and the kill bill vol 2 sequence (the one with gogo (the japanese girl))

should i get something else as well??

Thanks!
Amber

ok.. well no one replies to my messages!

anyway, i tested another system today. It is:

Marantz 5600 A/V : Rs. 42,000
Mordaunt short avant 908i floorstanders : 31,500
Mordaunt short avant 903i bookshelf (for surround): 13,500
MS avant 905i centre channel : 10,500
MS avant 907 sub : 13,500

Net total : Rs.1,11,000. After discount im getting it for 1lac

sounded excellent! and the guy is willing to provide a home demo as well.

Played hotel california and a sequence from saving private ryan. vocals were really good and so was the thump, bullent and all those sounds.

Im really impressed but i want to get some opinion from you guys about the price and product quality.

Please help me out

LOL..yeah, not exactly multi-brand because it houses only Marantz receivers and Boston acoustics/MS speakers. Also has integrated nakamichi systems.

But yeah, awesome place, it has like 3-4 listening rooms and very very good salespersons.

www.sharadamotors.com (in case u are interested :))

yup... i wrote about the system i liked. post#2. it was in my budget and sounded excellent. You can meet Gaurav Singh there, he helped me out and is a really knowledgable guy. He is not a 'push' salesman. when i told him about my first choice being an onkyo system, he said it was really nice and i could go for it. He even dissuaded my from buying cannon projectors (a brand his company sells) and told me about better projectors that existed.

so yeah.. you should go there.

I read that particular post but was under the impression that you were testing it, and had not decided to buy it.

NO rear centre? If i remember correctly this is a 7.1 ?

I'm looking at getting a sub , was evaluating boston vs MS. Which do u prefer. I am not keen on spending too much since this is a second system but i have only heard Boston so far... which was ok but u must have tested both?

well the onkyo 990 was a 7.1 system. It was really nice but i thought the MS + Marantz combo beat it hands down.

I didnt test the boston sub coz the package seemed out of my budget. The MS sub was really good tho.

Personally, im not much of an audiophile so i might not have been able to tell the difference between one sub and the other

if you do test both.. let me know for sure. Any other systems or shops u recommend?

Very few in delhi. I remember the frustration i went through when i set up myu first system I had the money , i had the time but no place to go to buy

There were a couple in GK 1 - Sound and vision , there used to be a jamo and a JBL as well , dont know where they would have shifted after the sealing.

Rhythm coner is South ex has good stuff from time to time, but be prepared to meet uneducated salesman and get an overdose of woodstock stuff!! :-)

The boston i tested was for 11.5 k. 200 watts , 8 inch driver (want a 10)

I like to think of myself as an audiophile, but relaity will prob catch up very soon, as far as my wife is concerned i cant do anything right except helping out with moving the equipment around.

Hi Amber,
Good to see your adventure with HT.
The Marantz reciever you have shortlisted is really a very fine AVR. Much better than the Yamaha, Onkyo, Denon stuffs in that price range. As for the speakers, the MS is decent but I have a feeling that you can do better for that budget.
Whats the price of the speakers ???

Another point to be noted...the SR-5600 and SR-4600 are very very similar sounding but there is a price difference of 8-9k. Try to listen to the same MS speaker setup with a SR-4600 and see if you can hear a difference between 4600 and 5600 .
You can invest that extra buck on a better sub or speakers.

hey abhi,

ive quoted the price of the MS speakers in my 2nd post :).

please have a look and tell me if its over priced. im going to test the speakers again today. ill ask for the 4600 as well and see what the difference is.

the sales person told me yday that the 5600 is better with the speakers because ill have to increase the volume on the 4600 to get the same effect as on the 5600 which means there might be small amounts of distortions (at high volume). That kinda makes sense but ill test 4600 anyway.

Also, u say that i can get better speakers for the same price. Can you suggest something? I would prefer floorstanders for the front considering my room size (22X10 sq feet)

thanks

Hello Amber,

You may also check the Mission M3i package also. The speakers may mach well with yamaha receivers. I have recently got a pair of M33i speakers which I think are sold as the frontal of the HT package.I find it well mated with my bright amplifier and musical. The Dealer's name in Delhi can be found in the latest "What Hi-Fi..." magazine

Not only are the Mission's value for money, they are excellent speakers.
At that price they are definitely IMO one of the finest. Do consider them.

Dear Amber,

I have a Marantz+Boston (7.1) setup and I am very happy with it's performance. I bought this from the same showroom at Panchsheel about 2 years ago.

I found Boston better sounding than MS. In your budget you can surely get Boston setup with Floorstanders as fronts.

Missions are great speakers but, sadly, are not available in Delhi. May be you could speak to SNV and get them from Pune.

Which DVD player have you decided on? That becomes important too if you are planning on building a good system. You mentioned about SACDs - which means that you are looking at a Universal Player.

Hi Doc,

I agree about the Boston speakers. Heard them at panchseel a few weeks back. They sound the same as the MS (tho i heard them in a non-acoustic treated room as opposed to the MS). The salesman however recommended it and so ive decided to go for that instead.

My final selection is:
Marantz 5600
Boston VR1 + CR67 + CRC7 + PV100 (or something like that) sub

im not sure about the sub yet but im quickly running out of time and patience :P... its a 100 watt sub and i think it should do fine, else they'll replace it later

As for the DVD player, i am going budget. I am thinking toshiba sd-360 or samsung dvd-hd860.

Do u have any ideas for good budget players? id appreciate the advice

video is gonna be a panasonic pt-ax100 projector and screen

Thanks doc

Dear Amber,

Consider the Pioneer dvd 490 at about 6k.
Its ideal for the Panasonic ax100.

Dear Amber,

I agree with Jay about Pioneer - it's a great budget DVD.

Why have you chosen VR1 for fronts and CR series otherwise? The tonality may be a problem. Try CR97 for fronts - they are decent and I believe cheaper than VR1.

For Sub PV 500 is better.
