Do DVD players come with 4-channel sound?

I have a surround sound speaker system with 4 satellite speakers and a subwoofer with built-in amps for itself and the satellites. It has 4 RCA inputs.

If I purchase a DVD player with built-in decoder for Dolby Digital, will I be able to get surround sound (with phantom center) using this speaker system? In other words, besides 2-ch and 5.1 ch, do DVD players also have a 4-ch option (like computers have)?

Any drawbacks to this setup. Anyone who understands DVD players, please explain.

DVD players does not give a phantom center channel option, they give only 5.1/stereo option.

Isn't it strange that a cheap computer soundcard can actually do what a DVD player can't. My n-Force2 offers 2ch, 4ch, and 5.1 ch. In addition it even offers low freq redirection to a sub using a variable low-pass filter.

You see the sound card has got the Pentium 4 CPU for help, but poor DVD player is not so fortunate

Ya a processor is a big help. nForce2 has a built-in processor. Which is why it's also used in the X-box.

To get back to the point. If I split the center channel signal (using a single RCA to double RCA splitter) and connect these to the left and right channels in addition to their own signals, will it work? Does anyone know how a phantom center channel is created?

Phantom center channel is created by giving the center channel signal to left and right speaker. But you should not physically connect two signals together but rather mix this in a preamp/mixer.
