Does the .1 channel of a DD/DTS encoded DVD contain any additional LFE that is not present in the stereo layer i.e. If a DD/ DTS encoded DVD is played in a 2.1 setup (through a stereo amp) will there be any loss of LFE as compared to playing it in a 5.1 setup (through a AV receiver) (other things such as speakers being the same).

Thanks

Hello Raj,
DD/DTS is downward compatible with stereo, that is you can play Any Dolby Digital/DTS movie on stereo without any loss of sound. There is no separate stereo layer in DVD but is always 6 channels. They are mixed togetherto create the stereo channels. for example stereo left is created by mixing front left, surround left, center and LFE (With different weightage). If you are interested you can see the dolbylabs website.

Thanks Lohifi. I was not aware of this. This would mean that the subwoofer in a 2.1 setup should have the same sound effects as that in a 5.1 setup. Thanks

Actually, no.

Lohifi is correct. There are 6 discrete channels and if you want to play in 2.1 the DSP will mix down the 6 channels to 2, and then the 2.1 setup will use its internal filters to make three soundstreams for it. This is the reason 2.1 systems use a single stereo cable.

So if you pop in a DVD into a DVD player connected to a 2.1 system, the sub will not be representative of the originally recorded .1 layer, but all the LF (not E) below crossover frequency.

hi,

what if i am using 2 floorstanders with 8" woofers and no sub-
in that case what happens to the LFE in a 5.1 setup

basically can towers with woofers almost compensate a subwoofer??

Depends on

The quality of your speakers

The amount and kind of bass you like

The amount of bass in the source

So both yes, and no.

but what about the .1 channel of sound-
i dont like too much bass,
my speakers have one tweeter-1 6' mid and a 8' side woofer-
rated max 140 w rms @ 8 ohms-
they are locally made-

When you take a stereo output from a 5.1 stream, the decoder normally mixes the .1 channel into the stereo stream. That particular information is not directly retrievable any more. A stereo aplification setup will then process it in stereo, so a 2.1 channel will create its own 'LF' channel and a standard 2 channel stereo will treat it as stereo.

As far as personal preference goes, if you're happy with what you have, that's great. If not, then look for new stuff.

Personally, I don't like using subwoofers for music, if that's what you want to know.

Dear Anirvan,
If you want to totally block out the .1 channel, you can do it like this. In the receiver, keep "subwoofer" option as yes and since you don't have subwoofer the .1 channel as well as the bass will be suppressed.
