Hi guys,

I want to buy a home theater . I would prefer buying component wise and not all-in-a-box stuff.

I would like to start with the AV receiver.

For really money's worth is Yamaha better than NAD.
I can go upto 25-30 for this.
I am getting RXV750 for 34K in Bangalore.
I would prefer THX(only RXV-1750), but am not sure, it would make a difference for the price I am paying ???.

What would the experts suggest.

Room size is around 10 by 10 .
I would prefer to buy something which does not get outdated in atleast the next 2 years.

Home theatre is more about features and sound impact. Yamaha's is a good choice, but its power ratings are generally overrated. If RXV750 suites your needs, there is no point upgrading to RXV1750 just for THX label on the receiver.

If music is important, I would traditinally stick with NAD. Rotel and Arcam are good too if you find models in your range.

Rely on your ears and check the ability of the receiver to effectively drive the speakers.

I would start with speakers, not receiver to build my system. Speakers tend to live longer in your room than the electronics. My two paisa.

If you are getting a NAD reciever in your budget then you can happily go for it....It is good for both movies and music.....

Hey guys,
Thanks for the replies.

NAD looks a bit simple in the front, no ?

Anyway , I would prefer quality over looks, so!
NAD T743 is available for 36,000 .. is it any good?

I have 2 sony tower speakers..old but functional, 2 philips directional small speakers, one philip bass speaker( salvaged from Philips sound machine model ) . Also one philips DVD player.
I would upgrade once I have some more pocket money (kidding) ...

Which speakers are good to buy

For really money's worth is Yamaha better than NAD

they have much more surround-dsps etc. (what I call "stuff I never use), but especially when it comes to stereo the NAD will probably beat the crap out the yamaha..

What is this THX btw

just a "power delivering certification" but...

does it make any difference to the listening experience

maybe in theory (at high volumes), but the practice is that many brands save the money for the (expensive) licence and put in into the receiver itself..

NAD T743 is available for 36,000 .. is it any good?

the NAD is surely a piece of quality. if u have this much to spend there is a lot of brands to look at, for example:

- NAD
- Marantz
- Harman/Kardon
- Onkyo
- Pioneer
- Denon
- Yamaha

the yamahas are said to be homecinema experts but lacking in stereo. the denons are imho a bit flat and "lifeless", at least compared to onkyo..

and there is also some fairly solid chinese gear out there, for example from jungson.

Which speakers are good to buy

there is a lot of possibilities (especially without knowing your budget), I will just list you some brands who have got a good reputation:

-Kef, eg the Q-series (my father has kef Q7 and they are really nice, playing with NAD stereo gear)
-Monitor Audio
-Wharfedale, eg. diamond 8&9 series
-klipsch (never heard them myself)
-b&w (I don't like them)

but as always: it's all about personal taste..

hey soundmind....

if u have a budget for the Yamaha 750,do check out marantz 5500/7500 and HK 135/235....these two are really good both in music and stereo....go around the city audition all the receivers and then when u start making out the differences between the receivers is when u will realise what kinda a setup u want.....actually u got to get experienced to make the differences between them......

the marantz and the HK will beat yamaha left and right......these are even better than Denon's.....

so go hunting to make the differences......

hey soundmind....

THX is just a stndard given to the receivers as ISO 9000/9001 tot he companies.....to fully utilise THX capabilities u got have THX certified Wires,THX certified players,THX certified Speakers.....these all will cost u a huge amount...sya approx 1.5 lakhs minimum......

if u are still keen on going for the THX certified things then check the Mordaunt short THX certified speakers(5.1) at audio planet,koramangala.....these are awesome speakers for their price that too THX certified....they have dual subs builtin the towers......just hear to them once even if u dont want to buy.....BTW even see the marantz 7500 along with these speakers.....they sounded awesome when i had gone there.....

Dear Soundmind,

Simply forget about thx.

Considering your room size a basic 5.1 av receiver is more than adequate.
But if you wish to be future proof, then yes you could opt for a 7.1 receiver.

The Nad most definitely outperforms the Yamaha and denon in terms of
Sound quality. Also consider Marantz.

If quality is the primary concern, then it’s the Nad or Marantz all the way.
If you are looking for a feature packed 7.1 then either the denon or Yamaha.
Btw, the Yamaha rxv 750 is now discontinued. You could opt for rxv 657.

On the speaker front, take a look at these :

Mission, Monitor Audio, Tannoy, wharfedale.
I personally am not a fan of JBL. Prefer the british labels to the Americans.
No bose, no jbl.

Try and get a demo for these products and then decide what suits your tastes.

regards
jay

SNV's prob. right. In a 10by10 space The Rxv 657 - which is spanking new - makes more sense to me. Everything you save on the AVR you can put into something else.

Having bought my stuff bit by bit over the last few months, I now kick myself for spending 5k more on my DVD player when I should have done it on my Sub - but the sub came last and by then the cash was gone...
