I would like to get clarification of the differences between 5.x and 7.x speaker system for use in HT. Most of the speakers packages sold as a set or as part of HDTV are packaged as 5.1 speaker system. Lots of postings in this forum request a 7.1 system.

Is there a significant difference between 5.1 and 7.1?
Is there a lot of source material available for 7.1?

My understanding is that the digital coaxial / optical can only handle 5.1 channels. For highter channels, you wiil need an expensive DVD and use analog outputs to power an amp.

What is the price point at which 7.1 shows benefit to a 5.1. I am not in the market to upgrade system. I am looking to educate myself to find out what I am missing.

Apologice to every one. I tried to move this to the surround section. I guess it is only the moderators who can do this.

Moderator, can you please move it to the appropriate section or delete the posting? Thanks

practically there is no surround sound dvds which are encoded in 7.1 but expected soon even there is no major advantage of using it for audio.

but 6.1 is supposed to be better and comes for lower cost
But probably 7.1 encoded comes by the jan of next year...then movie experience is totally diff...

What has been told is that many humans are not able to distinguish between sound coming from right behind and the one coming directly from the centre. That is the reason why 5.1 and 7.1s are more common than 6.1. This is mostly hear say, so I am willing to stand corrected.

Many of the receivers in the market can decode to 7.1 channels. The question basically is for a given price point, would you choose a more expensive speakers for 5.1 or lower end 7.1 speakers?

dear Rajesh,
i have a pretty big(by my friends standards) DVD collection and i can tell u that what we find most in the market is 5.1 material..
the 7.1 software is yet to take off in India and acroosss the world..
you Already have killer fronts and center..
i suggest u complete ur 5.1 setup and enjoy for a year or so and then think of upgrading..
in 7.1 u are only adding 2 more surround channels and u need room to be able to distinguish between the channels..too close could simply sound like a single channel with no spread in the sound field..
the idea of rear surrounds is very debatable and most of the forums suggest a good 5.1 setup instead of a okay 7.1
Its for u to pick...
Cheers,
Sachi

I opened this list more for educational standpoint for me and others.

I see many requests for 7 speaker system pop up in this forum. All stores, friends and most forums have recommended a 5.1 speaker system. The request for 7 speaker system is more in this forum than any I have seen previously. Some may argue that the receiver can deliver surround effects on 7 speakers from 5.1 source.

Sachi, mine is a 5.0 configuration. Will need to wait a few months to get a good sub.

That's true..
except that it is the same surround channel signal and hence the extra set of spreakers is made redundant..in fact it could lead to confusing the listener

For educational reasons..i too am interested in finding out more..
Cheers,
Sachi

To the best of my knowledge, the only 9 channel receiver is this model from Yamaha. I am not aware of any source available for this setup however.
