Im planning to use a 10 inch driver for Midbass application The woofer had got natural freq roll off after 2.2khz I want to use the crossover point at 1800hz since the Tweeter can be crossed very easily... The system is a two way speaker system who loves good bass with excellent treble...But I need to know what about mids with the 10 inch driver... Ive seen many Studio Monitors using 10 inch driver in their two way active system. But a bit in Dylema regarding this.. Bookshelf with 10 inch driver? will it be good? but the front baffle will be exactly 10 inch as the driver I need comments and suggestions for this...any drawbacks with this config? cheers, Sandeep |

You shouldn't. A typical 10" will start beaming at around 700 Hz, affecting response in the 600-fc range. Unless it's exceptionally well-made. A lot of fullrange speakers are 8" and more, crossing over only at about 3-5 KHz to a supertweeter. But they are $upremely expensive. The advantage of the bigger cone will be that excursion will be less for a given frequency, reducing IMD and doppler effects. But beaming is a more severe problem. The reason you can get away with it in studio environments is that listening is mostly nearfield to midfield, and the drivers can be focused into one specific area. In home environments such tight specifications cannot be imposed on the room. You can get away with 6" drivers albeit at a much higher cost. The Adire extremis is a good example, it's only 6.5" but couples a superb motor to a very good mechanical assembly to provide extreme linear excurions and yet preserve good piston movement up to about 4KHz. If that is not an option, then you might try and implement a 2.5 way system with a couple of 6.5" drivers. That will keep the source size manageable and you get the benefit of doubled drivers. If you still want to show off a 10" Woofer, consider mounting it on the side and powering it like Def. Tech. The effect is nice for HT, but for music it is not the best - though there's really no accounting for taste, your client may like it. You'll then need something to take care of midbass and high end, consider using a small coaxial or a small two-three driver complement. |

You will need an exceptional 10" woofer to go till 1.8kHz.Assuming that you do get one,the real deal will be how you cross over to the high frequency device.Let me assure you that none of the standard x-over topologies will get you the correct power response. .You will really have to search hard to find the correct x-over.It is there, but not published freely.Best of luck finding it. Regards Deaf. |
