I just read this while browsing through some views on MTM speakers.

"Orientation should be vertical for best sound, as with any speaker. Any array of drivers (even if it's just a woofer and tweeter) along a line will exhibit "lobing" (off-axis frequency response unevenness caused by interference patterns between the drivers) along that line. Keeping the alignment on a vertical line puts the offending anomalies above and below the speaker (the least offensive place for them).

Yes, that goes for center channel speakers, too. The only reason they're horizontal is to fit atop a TV. It's a poor tradeoff"

Is it true that we are compromising on quality of sound, just for the comfort of placing the Center Channel horizontal on the TV?

Manek...there is something think about...though need not be true for all design.

Remember the discussion we had on baffle diffraction ...

not really many speakers like Proacs, harbeth have theor tweeters OFF center.

may studio monitors actually have a horizondal orientation

legacy audio speakers are in fact an altogether different orientation !

of course there might be some speakers which compromise on the design in order for the TV placement..but that is not necessarily so.

A kinky idea: entirely for crazies
But, it should serve the requirement well!

Instead of one center channel, have two on either side of the TV. Even flrs will do fine - you can now place them vertically. (Your AVR must support 4 ohms impedance, if two 8 ohm speakers are being used).

If I placed the regular center channel vertically on the TV, it would fall off

Actually, it all depends on the type of music being played;
e.g. for romantic music, a vertical placement would be the best...
