Interesting view on HT..especially for those who like the slim minimalistic approach. Apparently even Yamaha is working on those lines .

Am sure for an Audiophile it would be abhorrent to use in Stereo, but considering the large number of people who like to use DSP on receivers on HTIBs for music, it might just about hit off there as well.

The Bose 321 and the Nakamichi Niro may have started the fad , but these seem to be very interesting ways of having a minimalistic but yet effective HT especially in spatially challenged rooms !

have to audition this one and if good, wait for the prices to fall or for Made in China clones to appear !

I don't know about the Polk product, but the Yamaha has some advanced loudspeaker technology involved in it.

Hi,

I heard the Yamaha single speaker surround system at a show. Very similar to the Polk system.

It was being touted as the best bet in surround technology. Came out extremely disappointed. There were all sorts of phasing problems in there between the drivers. I suppose that's the only way they can come up to confuse the brain into thinking the sound is coming from everywhere.

Have you heard a stereo set up with the two speakers out of phase? The effect there was similar. It drove me out of the room. Another example of technology going awry!

Dear Viren,
The stupidity of lab boffins is evident in this product. They designed a Bessel array with beam steering capabilities,a technology which requires the best live sound engineers several months to master, and expect the novice home user to optimise it in their residences.Even the sales staff will have no clue what the product is about,EVER.How do these kind of products ever succed?Just marketing I guess. The Polk, I don't know if it applies the same technology though.Should find out though, just for kicksake.
Regards Deaf.

Arj,
i've seen this often now esp. in Stereophile. Certainly looks like a compact way to address the 5 separate speaker issue where one (often) has to piss off the wife to find place for 5 speakers + match their colour to the furniture! Sometimes even drill holes in the wall to mount the speakers.
This solution from Polk Audio is a WAF-happy one much like the little cube speakers created by Bose many yrs ago.
If it works, Bose better watch out! No more running the wires under the carpet or under the floor or along the wall to wire those rear speakers!

Yes WAF is THE key in these products. An when that is the most important factor, nobody even thinks about Sound quality

Especially as these look very good with Plasma TVs

I put in a Bose HT system just for that.. Everyone happy watching TV and I slink off to the study for some music

Virens Point about phase is very pertinent.. i guessthe illusion of surround is made by that.. how else can they do it if not bouncing of walls.

I remember reading about about a 4x5 array of speakers to do the same. cannot find it on the net now
