Does biwiring help?? Linn's can be tri-wired ..oops triple your speaker cable budget if your amp permits..does this really benefit you in proportion ??.....

well it really depends on the speaker. some speakers take to it, some dont and some dont even have that option.

IMHO if you have a budget for cables better to spend it all on the best quality cable rather than 2 lower quality cables... but again other may have a different opinion. and some dont believe cables make a difference (Do they ?)

in the end i prefer the final option of spending it all on CDs

bi-wire with bi-amping sometimes would make a difference in sound quality.

Just simple biwiring(two sets of wires from the same amp terminals to speakers) is a no no in my books. Just use the same small piece of jumper wire as the speaker cable and you are set.

A cable company that doesn't believe in biwiring? Now that's an interesting read:

I agree with ARJ. If it works for you, do it. Endless debates are there on numerous audio forums. End of the day, it is like the “electrical cable vs hi-end cable” debate only. Some can make out the difference, others can’t.

guys...i think the bi-wire funda was introduced by the cable manufacturers just to boost the sales...rather double it....

Amp_nut, Manek: can you please explain why you guys think that "two sets of wires from the same amp terminals to speakers is a no no in my books"?
Thanks!

Re. biwiring, my experience seems to mirror what "Arj" said earlier: some speakers take well to it, others are ho-hum about it & in still others it makes no diff.

There seem to be several reasons to biwire (or not) & one of the reasons is back-EMF from the speaker drivers into the x-over network.
When I used to have B&W speakers, upon the manuf suggestion, I did biwire them in the "no-no" method cited by Manek & I can tell you that it made a diff to the sound for the better. I did compare the sound thru them single-wired & biwired. The jumpers I used were from the same manuf as the speaker cables.
I'm not sure that I have a concrete explanation for why the "no-no" biwiring method was successful but 1 hypothesis that I had was that with biwiring, the tweeter-mid xover & the woofer xover BOTH saw a low impedance (that of the amp) at the same time. Hence, if there was any back-EMF from the drivers to the x-over, there was a very low imp path for it rather than this back-EMF running around the x-over boards & polluting everything.

Empirically, I find that those speakers whose x-overs are carefully & well-designed, biwiring has little or no effect on their overall sound. In fact, manuf of those speakers specifically tell the user to not biwire.

Hi Bombaywalla,

I agree, that bi-wiring should in theory better seperate the Back EMF paths, and each damped seperately, at the speaker terminals.

However, my limited Practical experience showed no difference.... but I must admit that I tried alny using ordinary ( but thick, multi starnded ) wire.

I did not have at hand, 2 pairs of exotic cables...

Even when I tried 1 exortic pair + 1 ordinary pair, bi wiring.... the result was worse than no bi wiring.

I agree that results will probably vary with speakers and amp used in the set up.

Cheers

those whose tastes don't run to straight wiring can use 'bi' wire.

i agree with bombaywalla and amp nut. i think it all depends on the speaker and amp that you have.

bombaywalla,
hi

I agree on theory that providing a dedicated route for back-EMF, practically whenever I have tried it, its been an extremely small difference or no difference at all. As a matter of fact the times I thought there was a minor difference, I wondered if it were my ears just playing tricks with me or was there a real difference. Not a large enough difference to convince me that it actually is benificial.

But if it has worked for you......great !

Manek.
