Hey!

Onion just asked about the best "Zauberflote" record, I'm going to go a bit further:

I'd like to know (in your opinion, of course) the let me say 10 best compositions by w.a. mozart.

I want to complete my classic colection and I decided to begin with mozart

Good evening,

Mozart is a good composer to start completing your collection

I'd add "Concerto for flute, harp and orchestra No.1".

wow!
That's a listing!

I'll begin with these:

Symphonies: 31,38,39,40,41
Piano Concertos: 9,23,25,26
Concerto for Flute, Harp and Orchestra 1
"Eine kleine Nachtmusik"

(Horn Concertos, Requiem and Great Mass will have to wait)

Hope that's a good start with mozart.
Or is there anything important missing?

Thanks to all, Frank

Hello,

I'm not such a mozart-freak, I just love operas, but I think your above collection is a very well start!
Or do you want to get everything mozart has written, from kochel 1 to 626?

the Mozart Requiem by Karajan is very good...i have it.
Get some piano concertos from mozart played by Ashkenazy. Ashkenazy playing the piano and not conducting an orchestra which by the way he is not very good at.

If you're not sure about what to pick of Mozart then buy the Amedeus movie CD. Listen to all the pieces on it and pick the ones you like.

Hey!
"Amadeus" is a great film. Just one bad thing: All operas are sung in english. I'd prefer the original languages.
I just bought Don Giovanni at that's a great opera!

no kimber, don giovani aria in the film is not sung in english as I remember it...its in in the native language....but getting the CD will give the person a taste of Mozart and his works and them he can choose what he/she likes...

I'd recommand you the Requiem, no matter which record, cos it is stunning in every way.
The rest is pretty much to your choice, whatever kind of music style you like.
You should try to cover a wide range of styles, so you won't get bored (or sick) of it too fast.

but keep your hands away from the "Zauberflöte" though it is very well known and popular I do find it hard to understand (the music not the Libretto) and it is one of his compositions i do like less.

"Amadeus" is a great film

keep in mind that this movie doesn't have anything to do with mozarts real life.
i could tell you a thousand things in that film that aren't true at all
Anyway it is still a good movie

@kimber-Frank

Or is there anything important missing?

As far as I can see there are no suggestions for operas
here....

For example

"Cosi fan tutte"

Schwarzkopf/Ludwig/Kraus/Taddei/Steffek/Berry
Philharmonia Orchestra
Karl Böhm

Compliments
from Vienna
