As a person with a long, abiding love for Hindustani Classical music, I do agree with the gist of the article-There was a time when music stores used to have many racks of Classical music;a recent visit to Planet M yielded only half a rack, to Music World, only one rack! In Planet M I asked for some CDs of Ustad Vilayat Khan Saheb-heartbreakingly, they came up with only 3! Irrespective of where it is, there is something grossly wrong somewhere if our rich heritage in this field ceases to be widely available. This state of affairs would also discourage young persons who have the talent from making a career in Classical music. |

Being a fan of the indian classical genre it breaks my heart to know that the industry is continuing to ape the western culture and move towards emphasizing, remixed hindi songs and what other junk. If we lose the music we lose our culture, the Government at all levels must recognise the need to preserve Indian music and culture. They should make it mandatory that FM radio stations give prime time slots for up and coming classical artistes and have dedicated slots for indian classical music. A couple of hours of prime time a week would do wonders. Alas, the mob mentality and the "s*it must taste good, a million flies cannot be wrong' outlook pervades like a blood sucking parasite throughout the Indian music industry. I see many college bands aping western music by forming metal and rock bands in the bid to look cool while those in the traditional art form hardly get a chance in the spotlight. Maybe we should try and pool out thoughts and see if we as avid listeners can enliven and bring this magnificent art back from the thores that it has fallen into. Feel free to comment. Never helps. it has to be a pull and not a push. govt can only put up a support system. it is people like Zakir Hussain, Chaurasia, amjad ali khans kids etc who can galmorize classical a bit to give ia wider audience. I feel the TV shows like Voice of INdia/Indian Idol/Sa-re-ga ma-pa etc etc have already impressed on people the importance of a classical base and what it can do for vocals hence that might have got a fillip. again this is may not be a phenomenon only in india. in the west too classical is not exactly growing (folks like pavarotti did have a role to keep in going i guess). Even in a Pseudo classical genre like jazz and even country music is merging towards rock/pop |

Arj, That exactly is my point..why look at what is happening elsewhere.. WHile people like Zakhir Hussain, Shiv Kumar sharma, Chaurasia are the beacons of indian classical, what happens when they are gone? TV shows that concentrate on vocals is simply not enough when you consider the sheer number of unique instruments that are native to India. A well planned approach is certainly needed. |

Sachi yes this is a fact and "S*it does taste good" to many as they dont know better...... I have been agonising about this very phonomenon for a while and that is one of the reasons for my passion for the artists of yester years.....the were masters of their craft and they will never be replaced and sadly not many care for their craft either....The current crop are only a shadow of their older generation and they too will be passed over by this "re-mix" blitzkrieg. But then again for how long ???? would things turn a full circle ???? I wonder manek. manek. |

Remixes do not sound good. Period. I am optimistic. Over a period of time, youngsters will learn to trust their heart and revert to music with melody. Even I have evolved from just pop/ rock to classical / jazz/ soul. But, it does take a 'guruji' to affect any positive change. Maybe, you guys can invite friends over to listen and subtly explain the beauty of clasical music nuances. My Chennai friend has spent so much time showing me his classical music. Change won't come by itself. We will have to spearhead it. |
