Manek, rescuing strays and keeping them as pets is a very noble thing to do. Most people keep dogs as status symbols and nothing less than a champion lineage would do for them. I have come across many such people would would not mind spending 15K on a dog whose breed they can't even pronounce properly. If all you want is an affectionate, caring dog to keep you company, you don't need a best-of-breed exotica. In fact its the 'ordinary' ones who are more fun to be with as they appreciate life more. I don't have a pet at home right now but have befriended all the strays around my apartment block (we have lots). We even have names for them, guardian angel, midnight oil, shadow, dogma (with her latest batch of pups), twisty et al...and the most astonishing thing is that they do respond to these names Its really a nice feeling to see them start jumping around me as soon as I return from office.

Sub Boss, on your observation that most audiophiles are animal lovers, I guess that's coz audiopiles are first and foremost music lovers and the beauty of music makes them appreciate the wonder of creation all around them. Don't you think?

Or maybe we are so sensitive to things around from young we started appreciating good music and we are so aware of minute things it just hurts us to see these faithful ones undergoing torture, where as the rest just over look it.

BTW I too feed strays in our locality and I'm blessed with 240feet by 80 feet of open area in our building as high tension cables passes through ...these cuties just roll over grass and play on the sand... . I personally feel if you want a pet adopt a stray dog and not buying those exotics and trying to show off..

sub you are so right....our desi stray's also make the best of companions, are sturdy, as sweet as any other and some of them can be super good looking ! They take to our home and lifestyle so easily. Giveing them a home is probably the best thing one could do for a stray but then its a commitment for life......its like taking care of babies, only these babies stay babies and never grow up

BTW most of the so called exotic breeds are local breeds in some other part of the world....what make certian dogs excotic are actually the fact that they are intentionally cross bred for a purpose or for a certian look. Most of these exotic breeds are have a few health problems....

About keeping dogs as status symbols, a lot of times these guys just abandon the dogs on a beach or road with their leash tied to a light pole....I have seen so many dobermans, german sheps, labs etc being fed and taken care of by the local bhel puri and pani puri stall vendors at juhu beach...!

If those rich kids ever stone a stray, please call the authorities...someone's got to teach these guys a lesson. Why cant people live and let live ??????

Very true it's just the corss breeding results in gene pool problems..just like the Asiatic lion..

Yes I remember as a kid our dog needed a good pat and rubbing on it's neck to sleep..and a major tomato stealer from kithchen..

My elder one steals anything edible. Sometimes we find entire vessels hidden under sofa, bed and cupboards

these guys sometimes do the weirdest of things....my edler dog once ate infected gauze pieces out of the vets waste basket and was sick for day on end....we nearly lost her.
it sounds funny now but I also wonder why they do these silly things sometimes ? maybe just for attention ? Thats why I said they are like babies and always stay babies

I'm not a doctor...we had a cancer patient at home...the guy was a truant and very mischievous...once he chewed up the entire wiring of the washing machine...

the best part about him was that he was always so full of life...till his last day...

I think one of the hardest part of keeping a pet is losing him...

wires, slippers, table legs, towels, pillows, car seats, steering wheel cover, speaker drivers, underwear, etc etc etc...every thing I own has once and more fallen prey to the paws, claws and jaws of my various dogs.....yes it is extremely bitter losing them but dont ever shy away from keeping another....they need our love and care....and we need them to teach us humans(or so called humans)the true meaning of love, dedication and friendship.
