SW, are you talking about the price of speaker vs cost of drivers ?

Looks like "shady" pricing to me asthey are not really passing on the following

- Cost of cabinets/binding post etc
- cost of crossover
- cost of design
- COst of Labour
- Cost of additional like marketing/website/salespeople etc
- Profit

IF they are telling the truth, nt sure how they will survive unless they are cross subsidising from some other business where they do not want to show profit OR funded by some some of Charity for Audio organization

Additionally, Polymer Audio does not give/disclose the phase vs. freq plot - he only provides the impedance vs. freq plot. So, you really do not know how big amp you really need.

And, oh, (1) if a deal in audio looks too good to be true then it is really too good to be true!
(2) if this slips your mind & you find a deal too good to be true, see rule (1) above.

I have not seen any Samaritan in this audio biz so far! So, if Daniel Khesin is putting $27,000+ worth of drivers into a $25,000 speaker & taking a $2000+ loss then I think that this is quite a grand illusion!
I wonder how long he'll last in buisness??

One cannot relate "cost-of-materials" to selling price of speakers. BTW. Cost of drivers will only be small fraction of cost of making the speakers (even in terms of bill of material).

There is nothing new with what polymer audio already offers. There already different products in the market that provide similar performance to a much highly priced product.

But at the end of day, there is a "social" factor involved with hi-end products...so good looks...the nationality of the product..the brand equity...all does play role in pricing.

Hi-End audio is still commerce...not a social service

Sadly,
1) people who believe in big brands(or fancy boutique products from Europe) will continue to avoid "rationally" looking at cheaper alternatives and
2) people who are adventours enough to try smaller brands..will continue to bitch bigger names.

I guess that is okay..proves we are not zombies and we can thinkg differently....and i'm sure there will 100 more threads on that subject

Tweeter – Supravox TG1 - $430
Midrange – Thiel & Partner Diamond Code Midrange - $12,350
Woofer – Hand made vapor deposited titanium cone - $595 each x 2
Total cost of drivers per pair = $27,940

This is the same woofer as was under in the Magico speaker.
I use it in my Resurrection Speaker.
Driver is made by ATD in Italy.
Just to provide some detail.

I am not a diy'er nor do I understand speaker design and construction, but to my limited exposure - I am told to believe that the most expensive part of a loudspeaker is the 'box' !
It is the most difficult to make & cost is highest - maybe Siva can comment of this - since he is the only speaker maker on our forum [I think] !

p.s. I have never heard the P.A. Loudspeaker - so I cannot comment on its performance - has any one else on our forum heard this speaker ?

heh..pale in comparison to Feastrex drivers, a pair of those can cost up to $69,000.

Very nice though for single driver full range speakers, if u can justify the price .

It is sold in India - Wavac Distributor sells that driver from Japan. Also makes his own speakers & sells here - his name eludes me. It is in Pondicherry I think...

I heard the midrange in kharma loudspeakers also cost a bomb too. Are they the same ?

Are these midranges so good to justify the price ? I have never heard one. I heard the membrane is a single piece of pure diamond

Kharma mid range is a Ceramic driver - same company makes it. T & P - Accutone.
The Tweeter in Kharma speaker is the same as this material - diamond. All Kharma top end speakers use a 25mm tweeter.

The driver in this speaker is a 50mm T & P Diamond Midrange.

The membrane is not 'real diamond'
It is 'cured'
The process is difficult & hence the price.

Will post a few links soon.

http://www.clofis.nl/nl/thiel/thiel.htm

The link I spoke about;

The Kharma speakers - like the Avalon speakers use Eton Woofers & Accutone mids & tweets.

Only the lowest level of the Kharma use only T & P - Accutone drivers - called the Mini & the Gallileo.
Rest are all Eton Woofers & Accutone Midrange & Tweeter.

[I hope I have not confused you guys] !!

Yes, Audire is the company.
Really want to listen to those speakers - someday !

Some of the biggies in the business love to use the super expensive and exotic drivers while some others do not believe in them at all. It looks like a matter of choice depending on the design philosophy.

Sir,
I may have mentioned this before - I shall repeat myself again.
The most expensive part of a loudspeaker is the Box & that of any electronics is its chassis.

So, regardless of the driver cost - excluding a few - the price is a function of Distributor & the Dealer.
So if 'x'i s cost of manufacture. The manufacturer sells it for 3 x to his distributor. The distributor sells it for 6 x to his dealer & the dealer sells it to you for 9 to 12 x - depends on his 'location' 'buy in' [trade up] etc. etc.

Essentially, in audio we pay 10 to 12 times the product 'cost price' Just like Pepsi & Coke. [ Rs. 1.25 is cost of manufacture] !!

My apologies, but these marketing veracities are very well known to me

The observation was related only to driver materials.
