Hi,

Can i use an LCD Monitor (primarly used for computing purposes) which has an HDMI connection for viewing normal DVD movies by connecting it with DVD player with HDMI output ???

eg: Benq FP241W

According to some website this 24" LCD comes for 24K.

That pricing is mostly wrong. The price is 44k not 24k. You can do that however.

To get reasonable moving pictures, check that the LCD response time is 8 milli seconds or faster ( less, eg 6 milli seconds )

Anything longer than 8ms will lead to deterioration of moving pictures.

As reignofchaos has confirmed, the HDMI to HDMI should do nicely !

A pity the price is twice what you expected ...

It seems that this monitor does not support 1:1 mapping. Which means DVDs will get converted to 1920*1200. Not sure of the quality of the scaler in the monitor.
You can also check out Dell 2407wfp and Samsung 244T. All 3 are around the same price. (i.e. above 40K)

generally LCDs suffer from slower refresh rates...they are slow to respond..
Plasmas are almost always better for movies..only bad part of a plasma is that they come with a finite lifetime...the picture tends to lose brightness over time..

I had mentioned in some thread that in Aug I had checked out 40" displays, both plasmas& Lcd's.
The newer Lcds(e.g.Bordeaux from Samsung)have a 178Degree viewing angle, which checked out and had no probs at all with fast motion scenes. This was true for Samsung,Sony, LG,Sharp, Hitachi-so motion blur was not an issue nor was viewing angle;Samsung had a pretty high contrast ratio, which , coupled with the sharpness of LCD's,made it a v. good choice-Sony's V series was almost 40K more expensive at that time.
The present Plasmas rate a panel life of 60,000 hrs + the burn in prob has also been sorted out; things HAVE changed.

Come to think of it...it seems my folks have gone in for tata Sky..
How do you think the chances are of hooking it up to a projector?
Wondering if it would be compatible with mine..

This is an obsolete myth.

Today's plasmas have a 'life' of typically 65,000 Hours.

If you use your TV 8 Hours a day ( ! ) that translates into a life of 22 years.

4 hours a day is more typical.... that's 44 years !

Well,I've only seen a Tata-Sky hook up with a NEC PDP-great results.A Hookup with a good projector shld be fine, I guess;I can't fathom any reasons why it should'nt, tho I've not seen one so far.
