Hi

I stumbled upon this website be3amplifiers.com who sells tube guitar amps.

He also has tubes to sell.

Any other similar sources known to anyone ?

I just received a pair of Sylvania VT-231 preamp tubes and a Mullard EZ81 rectifier tube today. be3amplifiers.com has wonderful customer service for an Indian site and the site is highly recommended. The Sylvanias turned my setup into a completely different animal. They are way way better than the Raytheons they replaced. Way tighter bass, better balance, airy and transparent highs and beautiful tubey midrange. This is the best 1700 rupees I ever spent on audio :).

Reign,

:-).....wait till you get your hands on a couple of equally good pairs and then you find out that certain tubes go well with certain cables and certain front ends and certain power amps ! Hee hee....let's the games begin !

Now try and get your hands on a pair of kenrads if you can. Strong bass, warmer than the sylvanias, voices are superb. I am sure your amp sounds quite different now.

Got my ez81.

On first hearing its got more headroom for crecendo, a bit more detail than the ez80.

Viren I managed to get it fitted in without moving anything in the amp !

The ez81 is longer than the ez80. Since I had my tubes installed horizontally in tje amp, it was a bit of a challange. They won't go in with the electroharmonics but did with the hitachi 6sn7 simce they are shorter. Btw these jap tubes are real fine.
Quite a surprise actually. They could have used american tooling way back then.

EZ81 heater needs 1Amp whereas the EZ80 needs just 0.6A.

Make sure the power transformer is rated for the additional load. Should not be a problem nominally but your PT may get hot if operated for longer periods. If it is a Lyrita product then I am sure this is taken care of.

And yes the EZ81 will provide more headroom.

Yes it is lyrita

Yes viren has certified its use

I don't think the pt is running much hotter than normal but the ez81 runs a bit hotter than the.ez80

Hi all you tube gurus

Been reading about the other tubes like 12sn7, 12sx7, 7n7, 14n7, etc

They aobviusly have their fans when they say that all of the above are better than the 6sn7 tubes in more than one way.they are also less costly.

Have you guys tried them out ? What's your story ?

Who me arj ????

Ofcourse not....not upto anything.....:-)

Yes I am. Since I like the sound of octals so much I want to explore other options in the same family if I can.

Secondly I was happened to have a chat with an old tube techie who used to service tube equipment but can't now due to old age and health reasons a month ago. But before he left for his village he told me his fav were octals too and that there are other treasures to be had besides 6sn7. That got me reading a bit and hence the questions.

Secondly, the 6sn7 headamp that viren built me has given me so much pleasure and the senn 580 phones are just what my ears like to hear so why not explore ?

Btw the combo of brimar ez81 with my kenrads is something else. Hearing big band and classical is a bigger treat than it was before.
