Logitech has stirred up quite an excitement in the home entertainment market ....... and sound music streaming music systems include the uber-cool Logitech Squeezebox and Logitech DJ Wireless.

Logitech Wireless DJ streams PC music to the stereo and control the computer's playlists from anywhere in the house, thanks to a large clear LCD screen and an intuitive scroll-wheel interface at a retail price of Rs.15,995.

Logitech's Squeezebox is more desirable with an easy-to-use player that transmits music from the PC to the stereo through Wi-Fi or cables with superior-quality sound priced at Rs.19,995.

Amput Ji, what would the advantage of this thingummy?
Would the sound quality be eqv to that of a cd player,if you were to store & play full CD Quality music off your HardDrive?

Kamalji,

Hard Disk Playout of Music is gaining ground, not only as a convenience, but also with Good Sound Quality.

However, the Squeezebox is a convenience, consumer product.... a Cool Product, if you may.

Logitech's US $ 2000 Music server has received rave reviews, and is clearly an audiophile product.

Ofcourse a HUGE amount of the Audiophile sound is contibuted by the DAC at the listning end, so if someone already has a Zillion $ DAC, then you are half way there to Nirvana anyway

The Squeezebox will probably match the sound quality of a generic DVD player, or a low end Audio Only CD player. ( I wonder if such products exist anymore ... Low end audio only CD players ??? )

Ampnut,
If the DAC is all important, then are the high-end CD players using the same DACs as are used in the hi-end pro soundcards?
I hope that FM is not used for the wireless transmission. It will damage quality a lot.

This reminds me of the Pinnacle SoundBridge that went on sale last year.

No doubt the Logitech may have better electronics but at more than twice the price of the SoundBridge it is disappointing to see no hard drive or other bells & whistles. I'm not sure I'd want to switch on the PC in my bedroom every time I want to listen to music in the drawing room. If only the Cambridge Audio 640H Music Server didn't cost so darn much...

Hmmmm... I have an inquisitive mind.

Can you elaborate on the perils ?

I think it'll use wifi and transmit the music as data files. The decoding will be done by the squeezebox.

Isn't FM quality inferior to CD?

Hope you're right Zhops. Lossless data transmission would be great. I am aware that many surround speaker systems for HT and wireless headphones use only FM technology, which is lossy.

Ampnut, I will have to do R&D. I am out of touch with the technology developments. BTW, I visited the car dealership and came across car stereos that have a USB input. Just plug in a pendrive and you can listen to your favourite songs. I really hope this takes off. Rather than using a bulky computer, why not just plug in a pen-drive into our home stereos?

That would be nice, would'nt it?
With pendrives being so cheap,Amp Mfrs would be doing customers a nice favour if a USB 2.0 could be featured on the front panel.
Any thoughts on how this could be retrofitted on existing amps
Do scratch your head.

You would need a decoder, and a DAC.

Hmmm, thats exactly what a squeezebox is And it adds wifi to the mix

well, this is the 1st time that I heard the Squeezebox @ the Rocky Mtn Audio Fest over the past 3 days.
SEVERAL & I mean SEVERAL rooms had the Squeezebox as their choice of music sever. Many/most of them were stock form & the sound from it was absolutely fantastic rivalling any CD player in the $2000-3000 range. In all the systems I heard the Squeezebox, it gave up nothing in the sound to a conventional CDP.

However, today in the ModWright-Art Audio room where Dan Wright himself was there at the time I visited, was a modified the Squeezebox to have a tube rectifier & a tube output stage. SO, you could see 3 tubes sticking out from the top of the box.
The music was playing thru his electronics - a 2-chassis line-stage that sells for $9000 & the power amp was an Art Audio/K & K Audio Vivo based on WE 300B tubes that sells for $13000.
The sound was simply fantastic. I spent maybe 30 minutes in that room with half the time listening to the Squeezebox & the other half to his Redpoint Audio TT. in no way were the sonics compromised.

(my VERY, VERY, VERY lengthy reports along w/ pix to be posted when I get back home ).

Interesting, but I remain skeptical for the Absolute level of audiophile sound quality from a STOCK Squeezebox.

I ofcourse presume that the Squeezeboxes were feeding Zillion $ DACs...

That would be VERY, nice. Looking forward to yr post.
