Hi,

One of my friends is going to Singapore and plans to get his AVR there.. Yamaha, HK, Denon and Marantz are his shortlists.

Anyone bought AVRs from Spore who can suggest a good place which will not rip you off and give you quality stuff..

Please..

Thanks

Buy it here !!!

Unless you are looking @ buying a 2 K US $ AVR, it is better to buy what you want from Mumbai itself.

I agree with Bhagwan,

The price diff is not worth the effort and hassle... IMHO.

It may ofcourse vary product-to-product.

Adelphi is the Audiophile mecca in Spore, only hassle is that it is open 10 am to 6 pm, so cant go there after your day's work is done...

i third the above. for entry level AVRs / LCDs india is not too bad a place..especially as it is almost like buying from the black market here

it is for specialist stuff on stereo that the deals might make it more viable.

and that timing factor is very relevant.. the 2 times i have been there this year the only shopping i could do was at mustafa...and came back with suitcase full of diapers

Hi Arjun,

A suitcase full of diapers!! I don't believe you, didn't
you buy them locally

Availability of run off the mill consumer items here in India has improved a lot, event he price is also comparable to that abroad.

What we find difficult to get is the "right kind of perfume" or things like that.:)

Well I did . there is this Brand called PetPet which has a very high absorbtion and is got only in Spore (When ones wife is a pediatrician it makes sense to stay out of any technical arguments and quietly comply !)

anyway that one good turn helped me in a low explanation upgrade of my transport

I know this is an audio forum & that I should only talk about audio and related things, but I too will take the liberty of transgressing.

India - Bombay specially has become a great place to shop. What I mean is Perfumes / Clothes / House Hold articles / etc. They are not only available in plenty, but the prices are actually better than most foreign countries.

These days when ever I fly back into Mumbai, I go to the market & buy the 'gifts' that need to be given to family. It is not only 'cheaper' but also my precious time in a foreign land is saved. Not to mention the 'porter' part of things too get avoided.

The strange part is even the Indian Customd have realised this, the last time around I walked from conveyor belt to exit. No X-Ray was done or asked for.

The strangest part, branded goods like Boss etc. too are cheaper in India than in foreign countries.
So except for 'speciality' products that no representation in India, buying from a foreign land does not make financial sense any more.

To come back to audio, for most mid-fi to hi-fi products, I am able to manage 15 to 20 % discount on their international list price.
I get 20 to 30 % on them in Singapore. Have never managed more. So although Singapore is slightly cheaper, I still buy from here. The freight cost & 'some duty' saved, is not always worth it.
The service & back up are there in India.

I say, buy in India & enjoy !!!

p.s. sorry for the long post. Got carried away;;;;

That is why I often wonder if what we get here is the 'real thing'

The price diff in perfumes is SO large that I REALLY wonder.

And then ofcourse, they say India consumes about 3 times the amount of 'Black Label' whiskey than is produced by JW.

Ofcourse this does not apply to HT receivers, iPods and the like....

Well let me check wth my friend what prices he is getting here and the nodel nos. Your expert advice on the suitability of the price would be appreciated.
Thanks

I feel getting stuff from Singapore is a better option.

A year back, the price differential between a receiver in India and Singapore was almost 30-40% and I am talking of entry level ones. (ofcourse lot of bargaining in Singapore too) I am not sure what it is now.

The other aspect is quality which is really where Singapore shines. I have got quite a few stuff from there and none of them have missed a beat till now!. They dont sell refurbished stuff etc.

But hassle of carrying and the risk of customs is the major drawback in getting stuff from Singapore.

A.N. when I talked about 'boss' I was referring to the clothes and shoes. Not the perfumes.
Things in India are really cheaper than abroad. Shoes - Geox for example is cheaper in Metro than in Europe.
Perfumes are definately cheaper [from Ritesh - my supplier - big fellow in the Indian perfume supply chain of things] in India than in Europe or @ Duty Free or else where.
However, we are 1 season slow - that is all.

Audio gear [common & fast moving] & display panels are at same price as Singapore & cheaper than Thailand & Hong Kong.

Cameras in Mumbai are cheaper than SIngapore. Only Nepal & HK are cheaper - that too only in 1 market [whole sale supply depot].

Clother are surely cheaper in India ! Nike / Levis etc. are much much lower here.

The problem in India is, that 'speciality' items are not available. The market in India is not 'matured' as yet, so we will have to wait for that to happen.

I do not know your source, but the top of the chain grey market suppliers prices are very very competative. Even if Singapore is cheaper, the freight cost & duty [if you pay] component will offset the loss. In low price gear - under 50 K it is just not worth the effort. You would save 5 to 10 K at max - if you were really lucky i.e. !!!
