Hi there,

If any of you are in the mood to entertain a noob, then please read ahead. I had been thinking that I understood "progressive" and "interlaced" pretty well, but the more I thought about it, the more confused I got.
First, here's what I do understand - Interlaced means each frame is split into scan lines, and the odd lines are drawn first, then the even (or the other way round). For NTSC, each pass would take 1/60th of a second. For progressive, the entire frame gets drawn at one time. This also takes 1/60th of a second. Each frame is drawn twice to get the final 30fps.
Now, my basic doubt is, what exactly decides if the output is progressive or interlaced? Is it the media - i.e our DVDs or the files stored on our htpc; is it the player - i.e. our DVDP or software/hardware in htpc; or is it the display - TV/ Projector? Now I think we can get a progressive output if our DVDP and TV support it. Does this mean that the DVD is inherently progressive? Or does it mean that the dvdp deinterlaces it? What if the TV comes with a deinterlacer built-in? Then would a non-progressive scan dvdp also work?
Does progressive scan work only over component cable? Or will composite or s-video also do?
How does this apply to htpcs? If my TV doesn't have progressive scan, then do I need to bother with deinterlacing or not?

Both need to support progressive scan, my DVDP supports, but TV does not, a good reason to upgrade

Component video definitely supports progressive scan, not very sure of S-video, anyway why bother, comp-video is the best as long as you dont think of HDMI.

P.S: What is "noobish"?

the advantage of progressive scanning is a higher refresh rate which means your eyes are decieved to not recognise flicker as the pciture is drawn quicker and with one stroke.

The TV and the DVP must both support progressive.
the media has nothing to do with it.

Progressive is supported only with Component and the other digital video sources.

Also, you can use a VGA source (compoennet and video are the only two analog signals that i know of that support progressive scanning).
My projector uses a VGA input and supports progressive while my Tv has progressive through Component.
I use a component to VGA converter to use the projector with my DVDP..the images are brilliant. I get a refresh rate of 60 Hz with my projector with progressive on and 50 without.
Same with the Tv except i get 100hZ with progressive.
