Hi all,

Just got my 29" philips TV.. I now have a 2.1 system with a TV.. now I am all set to tweak the setup for home theater, only problem ... no center/surround

Well I am not particular about the surrounds.. I guess it can wait. But my immediate concern is center channel.

I have 2 options:
1. Connect the center channel pre-out to the TV .I think it will suck in terms of audio quality, but its better than not having it I suppose.
2. Split the output of the center channel and distribute it among left and right. I am assuming that since the front speakers have 2 inputs it can be done. (Correct me if I that was a stupid statement) Anyway, even if that is done, I am not sure if it will be good since center channel is a bit directional so it should be at the center.

Now the choice is between the two (if second choice is valid), there is an option 3 which is to buy a center channel and thats COMPLETELY ruled out for now.

Somehow I am not very happy with the 2 channel downmix audio tracks on the DVD. Especially the dialogues. Thats the reason for going in for the above experiment.

Option 2 ie of a stereo works very well for me.

In my current setup in Paris i dont have a HT, but only my stereo and since they image very well, i really do not miss a center channel..

better have a good quality stereo setup than a average center channel..

since the center channel actuallytakes care of 80% of the voice it is very important hence no compromises is preferred.

Ya, if the imaging is good then it can actually do a decent job in the absence of a center channel.....the only catch here is, keep your TV atleast 2-3 feet behind the speakers...otherwise however good your speakers might be, the image will be totally destroyed. If you have the space, then please move your tv atleast 2 feet behind the speakers and then carry out the experiment.

Option 1 is avoidable, if your front speakers are of good quality, also try with different surround options, like width/ panorama, etc. Many people actually survive with a 2.1/ 4.1 system pretty well.
