I would suggest you take a look at Buy & Sell section of this forum there you would find Mr.Shahrukh (same sunfire guy above) selling off his SR-4400, most probably you would get it at a very good price. I have auditioned that AVR and its fantastic.
Moreover I didnt find much difference between SR5500 and SR4400 in terms of sonic qualities...they have the same charactristic signature sound of Marantz, only thing would be that SR-5500 may go louder (which you can hardly use unless you have a huge hall say around 25 * 18 kinds), so a SR-4400 serves almost all the purpose that a SR-5500 can do in a average Indian Hall size.
With the rest of the money go for a dedicated Stereo amp..and WOILA!!! You have best possible sound within your budget for both Movies and Music

I am not too much into second-hand products, so will drop the idea.

What about denon and onkyo ??

Denon and Onkyo are good...but only for HT..no dont expect any stereo performance from them. Out of them Denon is better...but expensive also. Else check out Sonodyne AVR300, too good for the price and it also gives you the flexibility to add a Stereo Amp seperately.

Hey Abhi,

While auditioning the diamond 8.4's the dealer told me that he can give the Denon AVR-1706 at 21K if i opt to buy them without bill & warranty. it is sold for around 28K with all papers.

Where as i am getting the onkyo tx-Sr503 with all papers for 23K.

Which one do you think is a better option. and in one of the postings i have also read that denon delivers better performance and dynamics and truly shells out those 75W per/ch when it comes to output performance.

One more thing do you think that 75W rms will be ok for a room 140 sq.ft approx.

you may not be able to use more than 35 watts in a 140 sqft.
So 75 watts is more than enough.

Regarding Denon Vs Onkyo..yes Denon is better but if you are ready to buy without papers, its better to buy a second hand stuff (which you said you avoid) thats because a second hand stuff is atleast tried and tested but new one is definitely not. AVRs are more prone to electric surge and things like that so if you are buying new then buy from a proper showroom like ProFX (for Denon) or Onkyo Showroom so that whatever extra you pay for warranty is actually useful in event of any problems with your avr later on. Dont buy from small shops they cant give you any service (even if there is warranty)..its like a grey market purchase.

Buy with papers or Second hand...dont take a middle route is what I would suggest.

Thanks for that help. So i will buy it from an authorized dealer and with all papers.

Now suggest me out of denon and onkyo which one should i go for. I have auditioned both and liked them both but I am more getting inclined towards Onkyo because of its price. But for sound quality i think Denon surely beats Onkyo.

What do you say on this?

I think its not worth paying a lot for an AVR, the difference is very very minimal...better spend it on something else like Sub-woofer or a Stereo Amp, that would give you a huge leap in sound.

Ok Abhi,

You have helped in making my decision. So i'll go for Onkyo TX-SR503. and maybe a sub later.

Hi !

I have had Marantz SR-4500 (till it was stolen) along with Boston speakers. I have been extremely satisfied with the performance.

I had 7.1 setup but I "feel" that 5.1 would work as well or may be even better. Because there actually is no true 6.1 or 7.1 system or software.

I have had a separate system for music.

Denon is also good. But Onkyo ? I'm not sure.

I think DTS-ES is fully discreet 6.1 surround system!

Yes DTS-Discrete has a separate 6th channel, but there aren't too many software / movies encoded in DTS-Discrete.

Not just the AVR but all my equipment except the speakers. The police have, however, recovered the AVR & the NAD Amp. I have not yet received them so I don't know whether they are working or not.

Anyway, SR-4500 is a good AVR for both music & movies.

I dont think it lacks brightness...instead it lacks the harshness. If you visit a good Cinema Theater something like a PVR or Inox, you would never find the sound there to be fatiguing...instead its detailed and smooth along with the attack....I found the same with the Marantz...while entry level Yammy's ARE fatiguing for a continuous listen IMO.

In Bangalore, Pro-Fx gives support for Denon. Yamaha has an authorised service centre at Koramangala. Is there similar support for Marantz?

Hi everyone,

At last i finally got my AVR. Its the Marantz SR-4600.

Yesterday it came around 8:30 p.m. and the whole setup took around 4 hrs.

The sound is awesome. i must say the quality is very good indeed, i mean the stereo separation, clarity and detail while listening to music and watching movies is just great. when connected to the sonus 2605 it is just blasting off. Since my room is not very big i couldnt get the sound level past -25 db. by the way what is maximum limit of sound level (has anyone ever checked ??).

The only thing which i think little option for bass-management and the limited range of crossover frequency. starts at 80hz, whereas other models in this price range can go till 40 hz. but its not very important for at this stage it still gives enough amount (if not much) of bass required to listen to music and movies.

otherwise rest is all crisp and clear. after listening to it at my place i have even forgot about features and DSP modes which i was speaking about earlier.

i am more than satisfied with my investment.

For this i would like to thank all you guys who have helped me. thanks Abhi, anirvan, doc, amp_nut, shahrukh (oops have am i forgetting any names here :(, please dont mind) and everyone else.

Dear Sunil,

Congratulation ! You will really enjoy your new acquisition.

You can check the highes level by simply turning the source off or selecting a source not connected to your system and turning the volume knob to maximum.

LFE cross-over has three option 80, 100 & 120 Hz - these are reasonably OK for integrating with other speakers. If you need an even lower setting then use the cross-over of the sub. I hope that you know that it means that all the audio signal below the specified frequency is passed to the sub (it does not mean that this is the lowest frequency your system is capable of producing).

A few more tips:
- Prefer to manually select the digital processing mode depending on the encoding on the DVDs. The system may or may not be able to select the best mode.
- Use HT-Eq(ualizer) option to get more realistic sound
- Use Analog input & pure direct mode for playing audio CDs (if you have a good CD player otherwise digital input)
- Setup the speaker size, distance and test tone properly for best results
- Route video signal through the AVR only if you have more than one video sources otherwise direct.
- Get proper Antenna setup for FM radio
- After the initial setup & testing - just forget about your equipment and enjoy the music & movies

Hope you have fun !

Regards

Sanjay

Congrats Sunil. The Marantz-Sonodyne combo sounds cool.

Which speakers do you use for the center and rear? which Sub?

Thanks doc,

I will keep in mind the points which you have highlighted. For the time being its only the music which i am enjoying and the experience is great.

Hi Juggy_25,

I still have to invest on the center, surrounds and sub. which i think will take some time for me. till then i will just manage with my current setup and believe it sounds good. Movies is only once in a week affair for me. but most of the time it is music.

You had asked for my review on the Sonus 2605. And as you have already said the Marantz / Sonodyne combo is really 'cracking man'.
