This is interesting.

It's from the Rotel site and it is edited rather conveniently ( except the glowing account of the Rotel amp, but really can't blame them ) .Nonetheless provocative. So what do you chaps think ? Has Hifi Choice sold out to HT?

Comments then

Different Market for both of them;

The HT guy is always going to go for a HT set up & a Stereo guy will look for a stereo power amplifier or a mono power amplifier.

The general market for the HT is definately bigger [volume based]. The Stereo requirements are always going to be lower in comparison [volume {# of pieces} based].

There will always be that small [I am not so sure if it is small] section of persons that want 'best of both worlds',
in the process they get the 'worst of both worlds' [debatable - I agree !!].

All said, both sides have their pro's and cons. Any 'die hard' lover on either side will defend his idea of sound.

P.S. However on this forum, since we are in the 'stereo' section all of us [maybe] are on the Stereo side of things.

Unfortunately the PDF carries only a truncated version, but I think the larger point here is that budget/mid level A/V amps today, offer sufficiently decent 2 channel playback. The other thing that they are also saying is that unlike in the old days, you don't have to buy the top of the line A/V reciever to get the best of both worlds.

Just look at the amps being compared here. The Arcam Diva 80 and the Roksan Kandy are no slouches in the stereo arena and these guys seem to be saying that the A/V amps of a similar price offer better value for one, and half decent 2 channel playback to boot as well.

And this is Hifi Choice we are talking about.

There you go.Now do any of you guys agree with that?

Has anyone auditioned the Sony A/V amp?

Without having heard the Sony, I for one find it difficult to believe.

with the ICE power /classD/PWM based amps which are gtting cheaper and cheaper by the day, the lines between these will only continue to blur.
if each channel is going to get its own power supply and descrete amp section, there is not going to be much difference between the two !

but as per the ending speech of Aragorrn in returnof the King, today is not the day !

Aragon son of Arathon did have a point in that context, which is relevant in this context as well.

Interestingly this article dates back to early 2004, which makes me wonder if this is a case of HiFi Choice waking up to that fact that the H/T end of the market is where all the beurre is slathered...

BTW Arj, what did you make of them concluding that Rotel is far better than than Arcam, Roksan Kandy and the Creek ?

My personal take is that very little separates these and in an individually complementary setup/music combination each is capable of edging out the other !

so if you are stuck in a choice after listening, eithr go by your pocket /the looks/review/ or warranty based decision.. if still in a quandry toss a coin .you definitely cannot go wrong with any !

IMHO, in cases of amps, the speaker synergy is most important ..but the speqker decision is the nost difficult !
