Which offer's good bang for money? A good DAC connected to a DVD Player(mass market) or a dedicated audiophile grade CDP(a NAD 521BEE)? How to know, how good a transport mechanism,of a DVDP is? Any tests? Thanks. |

I'll give you a pointer...my friend is using a pioneer dvd player as a transport with an EAD dac and preamp and he says this cant touch the dedicated EAD or CEC transport but comesreal close..but then he had a very good dac......so it also depends on the quality of the dac used...:-) Manek. |

If an One Box CDP is opened up, in the end it consists of a transport and a DAC. hence the question of Transport + DAC vs integerated Box is the same are Pre Power Vs Int Amp With separate components, you have more options of mix and match. One advantage a Transport + DAC offers is that if you already have a CDP whose current market value is not very high, you get more sound for the same money by buying a DAC + Digital cable.. |

sub, these really expensive dacs are something else, I've heard the EAD and theta, forsell, esoteric, Audio note etc and they really are something else..... I do feel there is merit in a separate cdp+dac combo if you have the money to purchase them. There are a few entry/mid level dac's also making waves like channel islands, scott nixon, ack d'ack, benchmark, bel canto etc...The bel canto and the benchmark I am told are quite delicious and cost around 1000US. The other mentioned are around 500US. These dacs are known to offer an improvement over similarly priced or slightly higher priced cd players. On the other hand there are very good implementations of cdp's like the audio note, arcam, roksan, quad 99 etc who have very good dacs. If you have a nad 521i/542 cdp or slightly higher similar cdp then the above mentioned dacs should result in better sound if paired with them. Manek. |

So a good approach would be be get a good second hand(Philips/Marantz/NAD) cdp,and play around with good DAC's,whenever budget permits. Does that make sense? Thanks. |

Please get a well built transport if one is looking to spend 2.5KUS$+ for a dac I feel sad that he has paired it up with a pio dvd player it doesnt make sense, its better to have a nad cd player that have that combo. Satyam. |

sbfx, dont be so sad, my initial response to my friend was the same until he made me hear it and to be honest it wasn't bad at all :-) yes he could get better but he feels he does not need to spend big bucks on transport alone, he also has an ead transport. That was his basis of comparision. Yes he is looking for a decent cdp to double up as a transport but the pioneer 366 does not do a bad job as a transport at all...Amen ! Actually the pioneer universal player also does a decent job as transport. different strokes for different folks....:-) Manek. |
