hey guys
have come across alot of posts on other forums that recomend and even give plans for DIY subwoofers. the claim is that with 300$ costs u can get a sub costing as much as 1000$. u only need basic woodworking skills. is this true?
now even though i dont hv those skills one cld surely take those pplans to the friendly neighborhood carpenter and get one built for cheap; the only real worry is getting the other ingredients like the plate amps, drivers etc. since we dont hv such a strong DIY culture here.
what do u'll think. doable?

very do-able if you know what you are doing...

I'm working on my own DIY project for stereo speakers and its been 6 months I've been reading up on techniques to build speakers. Sometimes its like going back to college again, so many basics I have forgotten which I refreshed.

Cabinet design and construction is one of the main hurdles to overcome. Crossovers are the next. It all looks so simple at first but if you dont study the techniques you will be in trouble.

you may not need sub amps...you could first try making a passive one and drive it with an external power amp.

hi manek
gd to hear abt yr project..has it taken 6 months bcoz of lack of time or equipment? let us know a bit more abt it and ur experiences.
i'm not a science graduate/engineer so the plans i've seen with all their talk of t/s parameters,QT specs etc is intimidating. is knowledge of all this important. is there anywhere in mumbai that i can source these drivers frm ? how wld i know whether they're comparable to the ones used in commercial subs? lastly, is there a place that i cld get it put together since i'm not a DIY-er

hey filmguy,

I intentionally have not started putting things together until I feel confident and comfortable with the basic knowledge I have. So many questions still remain unanswered.

Sourcing drivers and crossover components locally is also one issue. Corrson in bangalore could source good sub drivers from vifa or scan speak for you.

Its best to read up and then build. No other way out. You will have to come to terms with TS parameters and other such stuff, no two ways bout it. Make any speaker blind and you will end up with a messy speaker.

so i guess that with my limited engineering knowldge it'll be safest for me to just buy a commercially available sub.
