Am currently using a heavy duty custom made ply rack with plenty of bracing all around to take care of the vibrations.

Not as glamorous as the audiophile racks available, but quite effective.

Hi Krish,

TNT-Audio on the web has a good section on DIY stands. Here's the link:

Prithvi,

I would not call it waste of time and money. The good part is that you built it and found out it did not work for you and these are learnings.

Did you find out why it was so wobbly ? any mods you would recommend to make it less wobbly and more effective ?

Yes Manek it was learnings, the designs is at fault itself, we actually built three racks and not one. We also strengthend the poles too, but that did not make a difference. We also made it of thicker platforms, same story.

Actually we used much better materials without any success. If any one wants to buy these from us pls let us know, we can send them in CKD form.

I listen to jazz of the 50'60 and early 70's. Western classical(syphonic and concerto's mostly) and a little bit of opera. Sinatra, tonny bennet and music from broadway.

Thats my poison.

Prithvi,
Have you tried hollow Brass Pipes filled with Sand along with Granite shelves ? upto 2 shelves it is pretty good ! (as the no of shelves increases this does get a bit unsteady). better option is to use Thick pipes with not so thick platforms and use teak wood slabs with a cork base on top of the platforms..

Anyways you seem to have experimented with this quite a lot

In india we do have the option of having a Pagoda type of rack made using Teak/Honne or mahogany with good brass Bracing, which does a very good job as well.

I personally use Granite slabs on the floor with DH Cones/squares for the CDP and Brass cones for the Amp..not the best, but gets the job done
BTW, pardon my ignorance, but could you give an introduction to Mr Murthy ? have heard his name in this forum but am not sure as to who he is !

I can definately vouch for the granite slabs and cork combo as I use it for my CDP and amp on the rack and it does the job extremely well

My speakers are on cadence stands, so thats taken care of them.

I too tried TNT rack and found them to be woobly if assemble as per their plan. The problem was isolated to rubber washers and solution I found is not to provide rubber isolation washers for the top and bottom shelves, they have to be tightened well so that a closed structure is formed and the shelves in beteem them floates freely on foamed EPDM spacers. The top shelf is used by my turntable with its own isolation platform and the bottom is for power plugs and filters.

My rack was made from 20mm OD brass threaded rod and 40mm OD Brass nut. The shelf is made out of 20mm MDF with both sides laminated with 3mm beech wood ply and real wood liping finished in matte mealamine.

End result is OK but not worth the time and money !

krish...as I mentioned I bought my lovan rack in pune. It came in kit form and is most easy to assemble. The kit is also quite compact.
My dad and i put it up in 15 minutes.

Another friend of mine bought a very decent rack from soundsmiths, a year ago.
