After much thought and deliberation I am considering parting with my DIY active 3 way speaker system. They don't see too much use as I was the primary user. My parents are much more comfortable using the Yamaha receiver with the HT setup. The system has been running flawlessly for 4 years now. A few highlights about the system. Main woofer box is tuned to an fs 28Hz with dual front facing ports. The mids and the tweeter are housed in a separate internal closed box to prevent back wave distortion from the woofers (i forget what i tuned this box for) Front baffle is 1inch MDF while the rest is 3/4 inch MDF Grills with speaker grille cloth from Parts Express 3 way Linkwitz Riley Active crossover (Tunable to your tastes with just a small flat head screw driver per channel) Uses quad opamps for the crossovers. Every passive component was hand matched to within 1%. Drivers *Vifa D27 tweeters *Scan Speak 13M-8640 paper cone midrange drivers *Dayton Classic 10 inch woofers 7 channel Gainclone amplifier. Stereo amplifier channels (1 each per channel) *LM4780 in bridged mode for woofers (110Watts into 8 ohms) *LM4780 in bridged mode for Mids (90Watts into 8 ohms) *LM3886 for tweeters (50watts into 8 ohms) Select between 3 SE sources using an input selector switch for stereo channels Single RCA input for Center channel with dedicated volume control. Heavy Duty Binding posts on amplifier and on the speaker cabinets Gold plated MX RCA input jacks Rare OPA541 gainclone for center channel 60watts into 8 ohms ALPS RK27 potentiometer Oversized custom transformers for a combined 1000VA rating 40000uF of industrial grade (nippon Chemicon) capacitor banks per channel for a total of 80000uF Custom built chassis from the ground up. I sourced the raw aluminum and had my friend Arasu help me in the sheet metal work. It is all aluminum. Some things of interest: The amplifiers during turn on and Off induces a "thump" (mainly from woofers). Not a big deal at all and is quite normal in active systems. The fake veneer on the cabinets isn't all that great but not too shabby either. The amplifier top panel has a few scratches but can easily be powder coated separately if need be. Oh yeah and the price..I have a bit more than INR55,000 (maybe more but i can't recall the exact amount) invested in these in parts alone (Drivers alone wil cost you 25000INR without including shipping if you bought them now) The drivers have hardly seen about 100 hours of use (simply cause I left to the US for higher studies the day after i completed it, literally  ).. I would like INR50000 for the entire system. Just add a CD player and you are good to go. For anyone looking to get into 2 channel listening this is probably the best bang for buck option. With the center active channel you also have the option of going in for an active HT setup (which was the reasoning for installing that extra 7th channel of amplification with its own volume control). The entire system weighs in well over 60Kgs..so local buyers would be awesome...unless you plan to drive over and pick them up. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Auditions can be arranged, drop me a PM and we'll work it out. I am not going to entertain low ball offers. Please understand that this was a labor of love over a period of 2 years of involving blood, sweat and tears (not kidding :p ) and I am asking for less than parts cost for the entire system. http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/3483/picture005qs.jpg http://img517.imageshack.us/img517/6346/ampd.jpg http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/596/dsc00929p.jpg I'll throw in the speaker cables as well...all 3 pairs (about 6 feet each) needed. |
