Hi,
Am about to plunge into the lower end of the hi-end audio
world. I have a budget of around Rs 60000 ($1500) for a
receiver and a pair of speakers.
The more I read, the more I get confused so please help
me out here. I am currently considering the following
combination
Receiver = Yamaha RX V640
Speakers = Mission M34

What are your opinions? Any alternatives?

Hi vjs.

for 1500 dollars there is a lot to get.

First tell me what your primairy goal is:

Stereo or Surround

and in what percentage.

The mission speakers are good but not so effective meaning you have to put in a lot of watts in to the speakers to get something out of them. i advise a different reciever because i do not like the "natural sound" from Yamaha.

So feed me with more info

Hi Audiofreaker,
My aim is to use the setup in stereo as well as surround
mode. I basically listen to music 60 percent of the time
and watch movies 40 percent of the time.
I am moving up from a mini component system, so this is
a big jump for me. I want to initially go in for a
receiver and 2 main speakers and then add a subwoofer
later on.

What do you suggest?

thanks,
vjs

Hi vjs!

Glad to hear from you.. well if you want to listen 60% to music , stereo and 40 % to surround i suggest that we seek the best option namely a seperate stereo amplifier, a good surround decoder ( with built in amps for center and surround speakers, and seek a pair of matching speakers.

Trust me with this budget there is room enough for "fine" hifi .

But before i can give you advice tell me what is favorite music you like to play, because when you want allrounders in music it tends to get expensive (altough there are plenty brands available .

hope to hear from you again!

Hi Audiofreaker,
That's one interesting suggesiton. I had no idea that
could be done.
I basically listen to all kinds music leaving out anything
that falls in the heavy metal category. My taste ranges
from instrumental(KennyG, Shastro, etc) to rock(Eagles,
Santana, Celine Dion, etc, etc). I hope you got an idea.

thanks,
vjs

Suggestion Nr 1 (depending from where you live) when in europe this amplifier could be a fine candidate :

denon PMA-1055R (image :http://www.denon.de/site/frames_main.php?main=prod&ver=&MID=3&sub=2&action=detail&Pid=9)

2 x 120 W (4 Ohm, DIN) Ausgangsleistung
HC-Single-Push-Pull-Schaltung
LC-Doppeltransformatoren
Hochgeschwindigkeits-Gleichrichterschaltung
Breitbandige Auslegung der Eingänge, Signalverarbeitung und Endstufensektion
Systemfernbedienung
uvP: 579 ,- EURO

here would the mission speakers sound great on !

for stereo listening a cd player is needed
DCD-685 (denon)( http://www.denon.de/site/frames_main.php?main=prod&ver=&MID=3&sub=2&action=detail&Pid=14 )

or if you have not enough space than a good receiver would be the denon AVR-2803
( http://www.denon.de/site/frames_main.php?main=prod&ver=&MID=3&sub=1&action=detail&Pid=31 )

would also drive the missions great and will save you a seperate decoder amp ( unfortunately denon doesn't build one )

just think it over with a cool beer and save a glas for mr Thirsty ( that's my seceond nickname)

Hi Audiofreaker,

I happened to demo a pair of Cadence Arita and Diva
speakers powered by a Roksan Integrated Amplifier MkIII.

The Diva's were awesome to listen to. The sound was really
pleasant and clear. The setup of Diva's and the Roksan
Amp pushes up my budget but am now preferring this over
the Yamaha V640 & Mission m34/m35 combination.

The Diva's seem to have good bass extension even while
playing DVDs. I will test this out some more. The only
issue with this setup is that I will be using a 2 channel
setup for watching movies, What do you think?

What the heck? if you like the vibe, like the music than it can be addicting even when it boosts your budget. watching movies in 2 ch is no problem so long you get a good dvd player with built in decoders for dts en dolby digital, but also a possibilty the choose between normal stereo or dolby downmix (like my jvc can)

otherwise you might come up to the problem that the sound of the speech is bot so good to understand ( in some movies)

Thanks for all your help Audiofreaker.
Will have another demo of this setup before I decide
anything. I have a pioneer DV-667A DVD player which I
intend to use as the CD and DVD source. Like you pointed
out, it has built in dolby and DTS decoders so I am set
from that perspective.

Like your DVD collection by the way.

VJS vohra...

Go for the Cadence Diva's as your speakers with any amp of your choosing.....these speakers are just too good...I know what you mean....I have the Arita's and I love them.

if you want good AV receivers in India(I assume you are from India from your name) Onkyo, Denon and NAD are the hot ones going. I prefer the NAD, DENON and Onkyo in that order. I heard the DENON 1404, 1604 a week ago and they were both very good. Will suit you well....Cinebels (the Jamo speaker shops have them). Do check out the Jamo E855 floorstander as well...I dont think they are as good as the Diva's but they are pretty good. You may like them. They are better than the missions.

Audiofreaker...

www.audioforum.be
They are distributors of cadence in Holland. A firend of mine has the same speakers in holland...Why dont you try and demo them if you can. They have an excellent range of Dynamic speakers as well has hybrid electrostats with very small electrostatic panels....

Hi manek,

A guy like me is one who has jumped from a two in one directly into perhaps (what all audiophiles keep telling me ) just below entry level . while I primarily like listening to jazz / blues and rock, I like watching movies too. So I bought a 5.1 system (This was very brave as no one I ever spoke with ever even wanted to talk about 5.1 in the same breath as stereo ). The other obvious benifit of buying a 5.1 is I didnt have to buy a tuner seperately.

Therfore want to ask you something since you like cadence speakers so much. I have recently bought a nad L70 5.1 reciever and a pair of aritas. will buy the centres and surround later. just wanted to know if you think the amp will power the bookshelfs adequetly or if I should have any reason for concern?
