Hi !

Avoid an Optical Cable;

Try to use a RCA S/P DIF digital interconnect instead.

Its better to avoid optical.there is too much conversion involved when using optical.pickup lens converts lite to elctricity,then again to light when it arrives at the optical output.Again light to electical signal in the receiver.if u are going for optical stick to good quality cables like monster or qed.
otherwise a moderatly priced coaxial.

what is the ideal guage of speaker wire for a Home Theater setup? wud 14 guage wire do fine?

Many times in the Forum, people say they use "High Gauge" wire. What does that mean?

Does the cable - subwoofer, composite, S-video etc. come standard? or do we have to consider any gauges for those too?

I'm from Bangalore and I've to check up where Monster or QED are available.
Does the optical cable provide electrical isolation between DVD player and AV receiver?

Dont worry about guage.just avoid cheap cables with few strands of copper inside.[speakers].no guage for subwoofer,composite etc.
only lite passes through an optical cable.
