Guys,
My 1st post here.
As I am planning to buy a turntable for the 1st time I have been shown this Philips model (Philips AF-834) which has a belt drive, hydraulic functioning, pitch control.
Do u guys have any idea as how good this turntable would be for a starter like me?
Please give your inputs.

Hi Satyam,
I have a Yamaha Amplifier RX750 model which has a phono in option in built. Its a good hardy amp.

For cartridge I am ready to pay a good amount provided its compatible with my Philips model 834.As of now it has an ordinary Classic cartridge fixed to it which is cheap.

I have plans of buying a Technics cartridge but I am not sure whether it will be compatible with this model or not.

please help.

regards,
Philip

Hi,

I quickly tried to find info on your TT but dint come up with much so if possible can you provide the mass(weight) of your tonearm as its vital to know this when choosing a cart for the table otherwise it will resonate at a certain freq.

One thing I can tell you for sure that is you will need to get a MM cart with sufficient GAIN (3.5+) as your receiver doesn’t have a step-up transformer for a MC (Low-output cart).

Regards,

Satyam.

PS: Give me a day I will try and find more info on your TT.

Hi Phillip,
I dont know about this Phillips model, is it made in India? I used to have a Phillips TT twenty years ago and it served me fine. I think it still works. Are you getting it dirt cheap or for free? If so then it may be worth it. What kind of mount does it have? The technics cartrige is a PMount. Check the Shure site for cartridges, both P mount and conventional types are available. There is one very inexpensive cartridge (Rs 1500) from Shure which may be right for this level of turntable.

Hi Phillip,
There are two kinds of mount. A P-Mount is usually found in older turntables or very inexpensive ones. In this the cartridge comes with a headshell which you then slot into the arm. The other mount has two screws with which you fit the cartridge under the arm's fixed headshell. This is the more common arragement, although Technics comes with a P.Mount as do some of the Phillips'. Check the Shure site it gives the details about the diferent mountings.
Dollars fifty does sound O.K.if everything is working. Are you buying this second hand? I need to check the model no. of the cartridge and will let you know.

Dear Philip,

I have used the turntable you have mentioned, it has its own limitations and you have to be carefull in getting new cartridges. Reasons are

1. The arm used on is of very poor quality, Plastic headshell and bearing mount.

2. The stobe and speed control circuits along with the DC motor used can cause hum with most of the new cartridges.

3. It is not a suspended or mass loaded rigid design, just a plastic body set on 4 springs with rubber bellows for damping.

Most of the cartridges available are too good to be used on such a player. It would be nice if you can look for an used better quality turntable and take the plunge or return to vinyl (as the case may be)

Hope you got my point and please dont feel bad about my remarks on the turntable which at one point of time was also my source

Hi Phillip,
Sorry for the delay. The cartridge I referred to is the same M44-7 you mention. Price quoted to me on 20/Aug/05 was Rs.2600. However this is way too much for your TT. Ani may well be right, although I owned a 'top of the Line' Phillips (Rs 3500 in 1989) and it worked fine. I was happy at any rate. You might want to check out a cheaper cartridge. Viren Bakshi once mentioned to me that he knows some one who sells Rs.500 Cartridges in Delhi. Try asking him? I suspect that they would be ceramic cartridges.
