Can the hifi's available in the market like SONY or Pioneer belch out 150+150w rms they claim??. I feel it's just an eye wash. With what intention was the term P.M.P.O coined by manufacturers. Does it hold any value in today's market.
Any comments on this??

nope ....none of the mass market systems ever hold their power ratings.

If PMPO power meant anything, a 1000W output should be consuming more power than a refrigerator !
It means the MAximum power outputput at maximum distortion from each speaker X Number of speakers which happens to be a meaningless number.
Most probably the amps in these systems vary rarely go over 50 watts per channel !

But why do they resort to such cheap marketing tricks ??Is there a standard yard stick by which the manufacturers measure??power output is the most widely used term in HIFI world and misquoted than the mileage or bhp in automotive world. Is it coz most of them lack knowledge..huh but the funniest part is when you see two people discussing about the power ratings of their sytems ( beleive me they talk in thousands of watts)and debating over n over to decide who has the most powerful combo..

time to have beer... and get back to my humble 50+50 wpc system

what yu need to check is the continuous RMS output of the amp.

thousands of watts are only used at concerts and live events. for homes you will be luck to use more than 50.

Cheap marketing tricks sell cheap goods to ignorat people and believe you me there are billions of such people around.

sufficient to say your 50 watter will take the pants of any mini-combo system which is rated to pump out 5000watts

HEY THESE GUYS ARE VERY LIBERAL WITH RMS OUTPUT AS WELL. I SEE HIFI'S WITH 150+150RMS FRONT SPEAKERS AND SUBS AT 125RMS. IF IT REALLY PUMPS SO MUCH POWER THEN IT WOULD COST A BOMB(ONLY THE AMPIE) PLUS SPEAKERS OF THAT POWER RATING WOULD SHOOT YOUR BILL UPTO A LAKH OR SO(FORGET THE TAPE DECK, TUNER AND CD CHANGERS YOU GET FREE WITH THE HIFI COMBO)

amps giving out 125/150watts come in various qualities and types, class A, AB, D etc...all priced differently. You are right...that today rms output ratings cannot be completely trusted. eg AV recievers seldom belch out what they are rated at as well in multichannel mode. But you have to trust someone sometime

Can some manufacturer of AV's gimme the true rating???.
As manek replied to other postings there are large diffrences in what they claim and what you get.i trust my ears and if an amp sounds clear upto 2/3 rd of volume without distortion iam more than happy.other details are irrelevant, whether it's 10+10wpc or maybe 100+100wpc

whats inmportant is that your amp should be able to drive the speakers clearly upto 2/3rd volume, if that is your benchmark.

Some speakers are difficult to drive and one amp may sound great with one pair of speaker and could sound distorted with another pair of difficult to drive speakers at the same volume position.

But I feel if an amp performs good upto 2/3 rd volume without much distortion with the speakers which atleast match the basic specs iam happy.......am i asking for too much??

It is the "Without much distortion " which is the key.
the question is how much is the distortion you are willing to live with. and this is just the amp, the speakers, cdp and the speakers do their bit here too !

but arj,
is it not true that most of the mass market hi-fis claim such high RMS rating as theyy measure with only one channel driven at a time and also the specifications is for a particular freq(usually 1KHz) and hence the Rms rating is not genuine.
am i right.

Genuine might not be a term to use..but yes it is misleading

From what i heard it is the sum of MAx power at maximum distortion of each one of the speakers in a channel.
hence if one channel has 3 drivers (3 way) then all three are added up.. anyway it is a meaningless number as the output power of the amp and the sensitivity of the pseakers should give you how loud (SPL) a speaker plays
