Recommendations for audio setup

Hello All,

This is my first posting to this forum and I hope that you people can help me out with my problem. I currently have a NAD 304 integrated amp and a NAD 510 CD player which I've been using for the past 6 years. My amp went phut recently and since then I've been trying to come up with a selection of components to replace the above. I used the amp to driver a pair of Celestion MKIII bookshelves earlier which I have since replaced with a pair of the Tannoy Mercury mx3 floor standers. These can handle upto 100W per channel. My living room is a small one - 12' x 18'.

I'd like to upgrade both the amp and the CD player. My main interest would be in music but I'd like to hook up my television too to this set up - assume that the split between watching movies and music would be something like 80/20. I'm clear that I would not be interested in setting up a HT system so even watching movies either from a DVD or those telecast on television would be through the stereo set up only. Would it at all be possible to get a DVD player and still get it to work decently for good music?

I'm based in Bangalore so I guess all of you know the kind of options we have here for audiotioning and let me also state that I am partial to the NAD brand! I wouldn't mind upgrading the amp for now and changing the CD player some six months / year down the line when I hope I can fork out some more cash but what I've stated above is my eventual goal - always have a good set up for music which can also be used for movies.

Given this what would you people recommend - and here's the crunch - for now my budget is in the range of 30-40K. I know that's not a lot of moolah, but what to do :-(

30-40 k for an amp is quite a healthy budget I would say.
If you are pairtal to nad then a nad 372 should be on your scope or even the cheaper nad 350's or the 320bee.

I believe marantz have started to enter the market again via shardha motors so a PM7200 would be a nice buy as well.

I believe from a few posts in this forum , nad amps are difficult to find in bangalore nowadays for some reason.

Cambridge audio would be another option.

Whats availlable in bangalore nowadays ? Have you auditioned any particular models lately ?

That has been my obervation too. There is a dealer for Yamaha here who says he can procure it for me provided I tell him the model. But that would mean no auditioning and I would need to blindly place an order.

I'm not too sure except for the Denon, Yamaha and Onkyo outlets I've not seen any other. Does anybody on this forum have details of other outlets for Marantz and Cambridge audio?

Prithvi is a dealer for Cambridge Audio (Mobile 9844094669) and pro FX at Barton Centre MG Rd stock Marantz to the best of my knowledge.

Hi,

Besides the Cambridge Audio (Prithvi) & Denon (Cinebels-Cunnigham Road-Mr Dinesh- better than Pro-FX) integrated amps,
you can try Harman Kardon (dealer is FX-Global or something..shop is near the Coffee Cafe Day near Vittal Mallya road) and Rotel (Total Sound at Gem Plaza 51132165).

Except Denon and HK, the other dealers don't have the amps for you to audition most of the time.

well 22nd is not far off so in the mean time you could take time out to audition amps not sold by prithvi :-)

denon pma 1600 is quite a decent stereo amp. marantz is stocked by PRO fx as well. Shardha motors Is a delhi based distributor and should have their representation in bangalore somewhere !

Hi,

Managed to get to the Denon dealer yesterday. He had the Denon PMA 1500RII (almost Rs 50K) and the PMA 1050R (65W x 2ch, about Rs29K). As for Marantz, the SR4400 and SR7400 AV receivers were available - no integrated amps. Listened to the SR4400 and the two Denon's though only the SR4400 (Rs 34.5K) and the 1050R are within my budget. Personally, I liked the sound that the Marantz (in Direct mode) put out compared with the Denon 1050R.

I would really like to check out the latest NAD stuff either the C35x or C37x series. Anybody know where I can check these out in Bangalore? I read in other postings on this forum that there are NAD dealers in Mumbai - does anybody from Mumbai in this forum know the current cost and availability of the C35x / C37x amps from NAD? What would your thoughts be if I were to bite the bullet and place an order for a NAD directly from the dealer without making a trip to Mumbai?

Meanwhile am planning to check out the other showrooms here in Bangalore soon.

buying direct from bombay is not a wise thing to do. How will you support your amp ? better to buy stuff which is available in your city so that if something were to go wrong within warranty you can give it back to the dealer.

dont make the mistake of buying direct...that model does not work in India.
