Read the article.Qn-how can a copy made on a black CDR sound better than the source CD? Does'nt appear very logical! Is this for real or just another "Emperors New Clothes" sort of a thing? Any one on the Forum with a personal experience re black CDRs? |

maybe thats why records sound better. they're black would be interesting to hear a black cd and see if there's a difference though. maybe its to do with black absorbing better? while the pits are being burned? black absorbs, white reflects more. basic science. |

But then,if black absorbs, something has to be reflected back.... |

tho' it does not sound logical, CD-R sounding better than the source CD is a daily occurance. I have not personally tried black CD-R myself but friends I know have & attest to it sounding better than most other CD-R types. I also have several blue-green material CD-Rs that are far better sounding than the original CD. When I burnt them, they were burnt using 1X speed. MY CD burner also has a mode wherein it makes pits that are longer than the usual length (these longer pits are within the redbook CD standard) & these types of CD-Rs sound remarkably better than the original. what's happening w/ the black CD-R is that the black is used to absorb the back scatter of the pick-up laser. The pick-up laser is able to distinguish between a pit & no pit thru the minute changes in reflected light off the CD-R surface but the blackness of the surrounding material enables the laser back-scatter to be absorbed thereby allowing the detector to operate in a much quieter environment. This in turn has the effect of fewer glitches in the power supply running the detector & laser circuits. Less glitches in the power supply imply less corruption in the supply lines. A clean power supply has vast advantages - same deal as cleaning up your AC power supply coming to your house. This is the principal reason that black CD-Rs, putting a ring of green or black on the rim of your CDs, colouring the clear plastic in the center of your CDs with black have an effect of removing "digitis" from CDs. They are all assisting in the same thing - reducing laser back scatter. Before you even go to black CD-Rs, take a permanent/water-proof black marker & colour the clear plastic in the center of your CDs. Also colour a black ring on the outer periphery (be careful not to colour the recorded surface! Usually, the music does not extend all the way to the outer rim so the user can be a bit sloppy making this peripheral black ring). Listen to that CD. Hear any difference? << if you system is up to the task, you should. >>
It's for real! Try my above suggestion before you even bother with black CD-Rs. If you cannot hear a difference with my above suggestions, black CD-Rs will probably not be worth your time either. |

What if we rip CD into 24Bit wave and create a cd.will it sound different? |

yes, it will sound different! whether it will be better or worse is hard to say. When you are ripping CDs, the ripping process does NOT create any new data. So, ripping to 24-b wave is nearly a futile exercise in itself. From whatever little I know, when making CD-Rs, the things that matter the most are quality of the rip i.e. is it bit exact of the original or not?, the CD-R medium quality - some blanks are better than others such as the black CD-R blank, the CD-R writer - again some machines are better than the others such as Plextor, the burning speed - I favour 1X & it has rewarded me each time thus far & finally (they say) vibration control of the CD burner - this I have not paid much attention to simply because it is inconvenient right now. if I try to vibration conrol the burner, I end up covering some of the ventilation vents, which I'm loathe to do. FWIW. |

I use Exact Audio Copy to back up my friend's classical collection. It reads the disks carefully and slowly. It also warns of errors. How do I get Nero Express 6 to burn at 1X? In my computer, that option seems to be grayed out. A question? Does there exist a way to back up DVD Audio or SACD discs? |

Neutral, it is probably greyed out because your burner probably does not support 1X burning. check the data sheet of your CD burner to ensure that it can support 1X. Most modern computer burners do not support 1X anymore. |

Actualy, I believe that the MINIMUM burning speed is software dependent. I use a Plextor PX 716A burner, and faced EXACTLY the same problem as you , Neutral. EAC supports only a few CD burners, and Murphy's laws will ensure that EAC will not support yr CD Burner. I use Apple's iTunes software. Its a rather large but free download, ( www.apple.com ) and it permits me to burn at 1x. I have been doing this for over a year Cheers ! |

What's the point of burning at 1x? Drives and CD-R's are optimized for burning at hight speeds, error rates are lower there! |
