3. Olivia Newton John
4. Lata Mangeshkar
5. Abida Parveen
6. Norah Jones
7. Celine Dion

Sav, you should listen to Sarah McLachlan's "Angel" (from the city of angels OST) in a dark quiet room. Heavenly and haunting!

Add Annie Lennox to the list. Recently heard her MTV Unplugged version of Here Comes The Rain Again - superb!

Add Dianne Reeves too!

If you wanna listen to rock vocalists, I have a few suggestions... Tarja Turunen(Nightwish), Sharon den Adel(Within Temptation), Cristina Scabbia(Lacuna Coil), Anneke van Giersbergen (The Gathering), Liv Kristine (Theater of Tragedy), Vibeke Stene (Tristania) and Floor Jansen (After Forever). Most of these bands other than probably lacuna coil are no way close to mainstream however.

If you wanna check out some death metal with female vocals, check Angela Gossow(Arch Enemy)... unbelievable :KR. Not my everyday cup of tea but fun once in a while.

Are they really so bad or are we audiophiles becoming a wee bit snobbish in spouting foreign names only, just to show what great connosieurs we are?
Come on guys, come down to earth!

personally, i have not had much exposure to Indina music. But, lately i have been listeing to a lot of Carnatic fusion and carnatic classical, chants among other things.
So will update my list sometime later.
But personally, i don't like Hindi. Never did. However, there are the few exceptions to that as well.

Tanita Tikaram

Bhagwan, I have 4 of her albums picked up from US and a couple of ancient cassettes as well. Her albums are hard to come by even there but her voice is worth the search I hope I can get my paws on a vinyl pressing of the Ancient Heart album...

Tanita was born to a Fiji-Indian father and a Malaysian mother. Her father was in the British army posted in Germany. Music was an integral part of her family and she grew up on a staple diet of Soul and Country music of the ‘70s. When she was twelve, her family moved to England. Not able to adjust to the change in her surroundings, Tanita took solace in music. By time she turned sixteen, she was writing her own songs.
