How does Inflated Tube help CDP ?

Hi !

I read it somewhere in the forum & also saw at Viren's place the use of mounting the CD player on an inflated tube of tyre. Being from medicine I was struck with an even better idea of placing the CD player on Air Cushion. Air Cushion is a round inflatable tube with a valve, used in the care of critically ill patients. It's overall diameter and thickness fits under the CDP extremely well.

Having placed my CD player on the Air Cushion I felt that the whole thing appeared very shaky. I really wondered if it would dampen any vibrations or actually induce them.

I understand that Pneumatic Rack are supposed to prevent the vibrations from reaching the components and thereby prevent induced "microphony" which could adversely affect the sound signal.

Do you think that I needn't worry about this shakiness of the CDP mounted on inflated Air Cushion?

BTW these air cushions (usually red in color) are available at your local chemist shops for about Rs 100 - 200 and come in 3 sizes Small, Medium & Large. Choose the size which while deflated is slightly bigger than the component.

Doc - I had a terrible experience with these medical Air-cushions some 7-8 yrs back. Just like you had intended, I placed a marble slab over the air-cushion and the CD player on the marble slab. Adjusting the volume of air in the Air-cushion results in getting a large soundstage, removal of electronic edge in the music, etc. etc. The sound was great.... but one fine day, some small tiny insect managed to puncture the Air-cushion, hence the entire contraption came rolling down to the floor. That was the END of my CDP!

So, its not worth in my opinion as such a scenario can always occur. This is India, not US or Europe where dust, insects, crawling ones etc. dont exsist.

well theory was sound but i found it too wobbly for my taste as well. but i was advised by someone that the tube should be so lightly filled that there should be only a very small film of air once the cdp is placed.

But i have a trio of DH squares and cones and prefer that placed over a cork sheet placed on a wooden slab. somehow preferred that

Hi Sanjay,

The idea of using the air cushion is still good for isolating equipment from extraneous vibrations - except for one major problem. It offers very little resistance to horizontal movement, and so is unstable.

What is required is a platform that is resilient in the vertical direction, but rigid towards horizontal movement. Check out almost all suspended chassis turntables. A bicycle inner tube, because of its small cross-section, and large circumference, offers that. Try it out, the smallest child's bike size - it works!

I am using a medical air cushion which is actually shaped like tube. I has made a difference.

Hi Sanjay, I too saw the tube when I visited you.
The concern that I remember thinking about was tilting of your cd player when balanced on the tube-a check with a spirit level be worthwhile.I too feel that the best way to avoid this problem would be to get a tube that would provide support at the side edges of the CDP;viz ,if you were to name the 4 corners of the rectangle formed by the CDP as ABCD, clockwise with A being the front right corner,B being the front left corner & so on, then a tube of a diameter such that it supports the sides BC & DA & is half inflated ,to give it more "Flex"would be the best.If getting a tube of this size is difficult then a rectangular slab of 1 1/2" to 2" thick PU foam might do the trick

hmm audiophile condoms means $$$$
"multipurpose usage : as an isolater of equipment, also enhances the experience" especially coupled with audiophile Beer

The above said with deadpan expression and tongue very much firmly in the cheek.

hey Kamal, continuing our discussion on audiophile beer, how about 2 free with eevry beer

before folks start "double entendre"ing the inflated tube thingie let me warn that we are dreadfully OT now
