Might be a good opportunity to meet.

Please give me the details. I was unaware of any show. It would give me a chance to look at DVD players. Is Cadence and Acoustic Portrait attending? Wanna find out how good they are.

It's at the Grand Hyatt Kalina, Santacruz, the one just off the Santacruz/Kalina flyover on the Western Express Highway.

Cadence did not participate in the Times shindig last year or the a/v max thing the year before. So don't know.

Likewise for Accoustic Portrait.

I just hope that there is a little more of the A this time as against the V

Manek,

Is there anything interesting likely to be launched at this expo. I find that companies never seeem to change their products for years on end. I am on the look out for an entry-level audiophile DVD player.

you may get options neutral. Secondly there should be new products around as many have been introduced into the market. Either way its worth spending a couple of hours there.

Guy's,

This should have been HT Max. Those looking to hear 2 channel stereo can give this a pass.

Avoid food in the Restaurant at the Hyatt. I had a burger, which I suspect, was a couple of years old. If you guy's never see me on this forum again, you will know what killed me.

If I survive, I'm going back to eating road side, Wada-pau's!!!!!!

Dear Betelguese,

Please don't, it is a total waste of time !

You pay 50 bucks for nothing.

Junia.

At the show I last attended, maybe 2004 or the year earlier, the 50 bucks got me a complimentary copy of the then latest A/V Max issue, and a A/V Max ball pen. The ball pen I still have lying about somewhere, although the refill must have long dried up, whereas the magazine was consigned to the nearest trash bin in Taj Lands End, post haste.

Most of the stuff on display was quite unappealing, and best avoided.

Luckily for me, the 50 bucks were not entirely wasted as I got to meet Aditya Gupta of Soundsmiths, who overwhelmed me with his hospitality and allowed me to play with his DNA 225 / Dyn C4s as if they were my own, after show hours for more than an hour. He also managed to throw in some good wine that evening...

Cheers

Hi Sub,

The only radical change that seems to have come about is in your visage.

All the puffing and seems to have done you good!

Dropped in on Saturday.

The show was utterly dissapointing. All H.T and no Audio.

In the past, while H.T has always dominated the proceedings, there were enough brands like Manger,Rethm,Martin Logan, Maggies etc to whet the appetite of a music/audio lover.

Last year f'rinstance,I spent a good 45 minutes listening to Rethms and chatting with Jacob. What a pleasure.

This time though,I was in and out in about 1/2 an hour flat.

What a waste of a Saturday afternooon

Yes, but don't you feel it's good for a person like me who's crazy about HT.There is HT fever everywhere and do you think they will display all stereo and lose business.Nowadays HT systems are sold like hot cakes on par with computer sales may be.

Hi Folks,

I do hope I'm not ruining the sombre mood with a smiley! I visited the exhibition on Sunday morning. It was worth it because of the things that you get to see and the contact phone nos and addresses that you get.

Yes HT was emphasised. But that's where the money is. And the movies sure looked a lot better than on my home Sony 21". But the dB levels drove me a bit deaf. Too much emphasis on dynamics and too little on accuracy and beauty.

I liked the Nad room the best where a record player was being played! Stereo isn't dead. IMO B&W, Canton, Polk and KEF were pleasant sounding. The sad thing is that they played the speakers using AV receivers so it was hard to gauge their tonality. In one room, they were even foolish enough to play an Indian movie clip with its harshly bright tonality.

The marketing was great at the Bose room. The salesman was really skilled. No wonder Bose sells - they market it like a consumer product. Quality is another issue though

Trojan Horse,
WRT your observation, but ofcourse.I was merely speaking for myself.

An A/V exhibition is just fine.I just wish that they had made that explicit.Would have saved poor 'ol two channel types like moi the bother

Cheers

What really disappointed me was besides the B&W room nothing even sounded good, be it stereo or HT. No proper equipment setup and fine tuning was done. Either the systems sounded too loud and harsh or they sounded too boomy.

People blame the rooms but then how did B&W manage it ?

The people maning demo rooms were just traders by professsion or just plain ignorant or had tin can ears or all of the above.

I was well and truely disappointed by the show. Its so clear that most consumers still need education on what good audio/HT is all about and what is more evident is that the dealers need very intensive education on the basics of audio and the products they sell.

Unless, you have some high-end / high-value 2-channel or multi-channel manufacturer participating with his mouth watering, drool worthy products, there is no point in going for these shows. At these shows, you should be able to hear stuff which is normally not available to you. Either you should be able to hear some rare product or you should experience some path breaking technology. Budget and common-place HT and Stereo in its various forms are there at any dealer and he probably will have a better listening room. I am not surprised…

Ignorant traders and badly setup sound systems add to the misery. At least the Bangalore show had some hot babes at some of the booths….

Manek,

You're right about the exhibitors being traders. When I asked the 'Definitive Technology' man about which drivers were used in the speakers, he was clueless. Told me that his only job was to import them. Audiophiles were rare at the show.

But the fact is that the janta is only interested in wham and bang. Notice the crowd outside the Bose room to listen to a mediocre home theatre costing 220,000.

Guys,
Take heart.I believe Times has a show planned for the last qtr of this year.It will be on the same scale,if not larger than the one last year.

This is why I am told that a lot of dealers either stayed away all together or put up a limited display.

Manek, I agree the sound was very loud and full of excessive bass, which I suppose is waht passes of as good HT sound.
