Hello all, I have a very basic question about hooking my speakers up to a surround sound receiver that I just purchased. I have two front speakers, 1 Center channel and 2 Rear ( surround ) speakers. When I have a show in dolby everything is fine. When I have a non surround show I have to set my stereo back to 2 channel which makes sense. What I noticed was I have two places for rear speakers. The regular and the surround. I only have 1 set of back speakers so when I have a non surround show on I have to switch the cables in the back so I get all 4 speakers to play in 2 channel, and of course when a surround encoded show comes on I have to move the back speakers to the rear surround jacks. Without purchasing another pair of speakers, can I the speakers into both jacks for instance, the cables into the receiver I would run each cable ( red and black ) to both the surround and rear outputs this way I wouldn't have to keep switching the cables back and forth? Is there some type of speaker switch I should get to accomplish this? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Flats |

A little more information on the model of the receiver would be helpful. |

Hi Flats, This question relates to surround sound so maybe it should be posted in the Surround section, but am posting a quick reply here just so you don’t make the mistake of doing what you are proposing to do. Don’t know about your Sony receiver in particular, but from what you write it is evident that it is either a 6.1 or 7.1 configuration. Since there would be separate amps for both the rear surround terminals, DO NOT connect both to one set of speakers. You will end up shorting them. Continue connecting your rear speakers to the main rear terminals on the amp. You may, if budget permits you, purchase another set of rear surround speakers, to enjoy the greater rear surround ambience that your amp is capable of. Cheers |
