when i do finally buy my sub i'll have to run a 15metre wire from the reciever. i was wondering if there is any signal loss or degradation if i were to connect 3 RCA to RCA wires with RCA connectors since there are no ready 15 m wires available ready.
thnx

Either have one 15mtr wire soldered with good quality RCA or bring the sub closer to the reciever.

Actually my friend and I have had quite some success plonking the sub dead centre and a foot behind the fronts....god that position works like magic. Maybe you could try that

A 15 metre line level connection could very likely result in the sub humming.

I would second Manek on keeping the sub in line with the fronts and slightly behind. However, since you say receiver, you are obviously aiming for HT, and to accomodate a TV, may not be able to keep the sub dead centre. No problem in keeping it to the side of the TV or even outside of the fronts, if you have the space. Only, keep it slightly toed in, either to the left or the right, as facing straight may result in the bass waves reflecting off the wall behind the listening position and returning to the sub, thereby canceling out some of the bass output. Especially if you are using spindly armchairs and not a plush sofa for the listening position.

i agreee with the guys.

after having the def tech for some time now i still feeel i need to experiment with the position as i hear and feel the bass a lot more directly oppotise to the sub on the other corner of the room.however the bass is really good for HT and is somtimes boomy. i think that has more to do with acoustics than the product.
i'm using a 5m cable for feeding the LFE signal.
one thing i have'nt figured out is how to use the sub in 2ch stereo mode on the yamaha.(can someone help me out on this)
all my music listening is now thru the NAD. however, the sub stll needs a lot of break in. can u guys suggest a good and easy way to help to speed this process up(without resulting in my eviction from my house).
Cheers,
Ben

my way of breaking in any speakers is normal playing, I have that kind of patience....

there are cd available with various tones to aid break-in in short while but somehow, I just dont like the drastic approach.

i'm sorry. should have stated clearly. i need to play th e sub right(that's obvious). bt the fact is that i need to drive the sub in dolby pl2 or DTS neo mode else in 6 ch stereo(which really pounds). i don';t enjoy the music though i like the bass in 6 ch mode it is way too loud(and the gasin is set only at 35-40%).
if i had more speaker wire i would use it along with the NAd but that won't happen for quite some time yet.
so guys can any one of u figure iout how i can make only the fronts and the sub play in the yamaha while i'm listening to music
i listen so ofte the NA d must have had over 70-80 hours of break in.
Cheers,
Ben

Benks, I presume your Yamaha has a Sub Out, and that is how you have connected it. In stereo mode, with the Effects Off, does your sub get activated at all?

Another way is to have speaker cables running from the receiver's B Terminals (I again presume you have the second set of speaker terminals)to the sub, and have both A & B switched on. Disconnect the sub out cable before you do this, however.:D

I prefer breaking in my speakers naturally. I enjoy listening to them change, however so slightly, every session.

Ah, for the NAD, you mean. I thought you were talking about the Yamaha.

One way of doing it is by running speaker cables from the NAD to the Sub, and then from the Sub to the speakers, using the Sub's crossover. By setting the filter on say, 60 to 70 hz, the sub's crossover will only let through 60hz plus frequencies to the speakers. Of course, since there are additional circuits being brought in, obviously there shall be some de-gradation of sound, but it is your call, if you DO want additional bass and are willing to accomodate the de-gradation, you can go this way.

hey big ears,
i know that i have to connect the sub and the speaker sto the speaker level terminals on the sub and need two RCA y spiltters on the NAd end to do so. but , i actually want to know abt the yamaha.
i'll check it up tm and let u know(folks ar sleeping).
but i think the sub is not getting any signal in stereo mode(2 ch).
don't have the required lenght of speaker cable to do the necessary A/B connections.
so that's out of the question.
and hence the speaker terminal connection on the sub.

actually the reason i need such a long length is that my HT room is my bedroom and is not carpeted so i cant have wires running across. also near the front spkrs and reciever is a CRT RPTV and there is only enough place if i place the sub in the corner and right next to it; but i'm afraid that the lack of magnetic shielding and the sound waves may spoil the TV unknowingly. also if i do keep it there and face it outwards then the bed might reflec t the sound; so i'm planning to keep it on the wall opposite the whole setup which is also where my couch is kept; therefore i need a 15m run...problems, problems, problems...

okay guys,
i figured out the problem
i should kick myself for not realizing this earlier.
u see i have set the fronts(diamond 8.4) as large and hence the signal was being fed to the fronts and not to the sub. but i had set the bass out only to the sub. hence there was no signal being fed to the sub at all.
i did the basic setup agian and set sub to yes and the signal was ther. bnut i checked in the manual setup and saw that the bass out was in both and not in swfr. hence i set the fronttss to small and then the bass out option to swfr.
now it is working and wow the def tech is excellent.
i still need to experiment with the positionig of the sub.
am listening to Whitesnake and the bass is just too good.
i don't know the Nad may be more detailed but it is totally another witha sub in the equation. even though the accuracy may suffer by adding a sub the bass(for bass freaks like me) is just too good to miss out on. my rock and heay metal colection sounds like it shoulld now. The yamaha is really good.yes the NAd is more detailed but he yamaha is not that far behind. maybe a dedicated CDP will show a different picture.
guys in for a sub, i suggest u check out def tech subs. mine rocks. and it has just been played for around 4 hours of break in. so i'm oping for more improvements.
cheers,
Ben

Benks,

Most common problem.

You HAVE to set up the bass management system within the receiver properly, to have various frequencies ending up at their correct destinations.

your bed will not reflect the sound..thought it may absorb some of it..that should not be a problem.

try that out and adjust the amplifier volume of the sub to get the best sound...running a long sub wire will actually be a worse option than the above...unless you spend more on high Q sub cables. that can cost you from 3-10 $ per feet

i still don't see why he needs 15m
that's a lot of cable.
i myself am using a 5 m cable.
u do realise taht 15m is abt 47-48feet.
u could probably run circle s round ur bedroom with that thing.
my cable is a good 16.5 feet and i can place the sub where my surrounds are located if i wanted to without the cable ever being seen along the sides of the wall. i think a 5m cable should solve ur problem.

Filmguy,

If you plan to watch movies lying on the bed, keep the sub under the bed and firing upwards, and you might just about end up with your own version of the ButtKicker

hey big ears,
i don't think that's a wise thing to do.
u see the driver is going to be heavy and when kept in the upward firing position the surround of the driver would collapse in ward and would act opsosingly to the normal action and u would lose out on maximum excursion of the driver(xmax). not to mention the fact that because of the heavy magnet used in the subwoofer driver the surround may get damaged or weaken after prolongled usage in the unside down position
though most HT are side /front or downward firing, i personally prefer front firing.
the same problem occurs in downward firing subs.
the manufacturers make sure to use thichker surrounds in their subwoofer drivers in such configurations.
however, u still miss out on maximum air movement in down firing subs, not so in front/side firing subs.

jsut my two cents,
Cheers,
Ben

on the other hand if u take car audio, the subwoofers have much thicker and stronger surrounds but still u ge tthe most slam in the side/front firing position.
normal subs used in HT rarely have such good surrounds, except for some diy ones like the peerless xls , adire shiva, or the dayton titanic mk3.

besides the amplifier will be mounted on the back of the sub and will need ample space for heat dissipation.

Hey Benks,

No offence meant, but you seem too caught up in your NAD burn-in, Yamaha / sub settings, Final year project, and whatever else you do, to not understand a joke when you come across one!

Take it easy
