Help : Mini Compo Systems V/s Seperate Components

Hi Guys,

Need some help from you guys.

I am planning to buy a new setup for my house.

My primary usage would be music rather than movies. Currently I am using Woodstock SA7000 Integrated Amplifier with the Samsung RCD-VS30 5-in-1 and VoiceKing (local delhi manufacturer, not too bad) 3 way floor standing speakers.

Now I want to buy a new system, my confussion is whether to go in for combined systems from Sony or Aiwa OR should I go in for sepeate components (IA / Receiver, Player, Speakers, etc).

What is the basic difference in the two in terms of sound quality and value for money.

I can spend 25-30K if I go in for combined system and 40-45K if I go in for seperate system.

The Woodstock guy is willing to replace my current IA circuit for the latest one available and the floor standers from Woodstock are for 10K.

Yours comments and help would be highly appreciated.

go for separates....difference between combo and separates ? night and day !

Thanks a lot for the prompt reply.

Can you elaborate a bit on the difference between the two as I guess on the wattage front (RMS or PMPO) the combined system have a higher figure.

And if I go in for the seperates what would be the suggested components for the price range of 40K (a cassette player, DVD player, amp or AVR and speakers)

Should I go in for a Sub and satellite or a pair of floor standers.

If the woodstaock stuff sounds good to you..go in for woodstock.

Dont go by the pmpo ratings of the combo systems. its an eyewash !

Its all a game of how much power your amp can push into your speakers with how much current and the combo systems dont dish out current or power anywhere near dedicated amps. So thats your first plus.

Separates will give you cleaner sound.

Thirdly at a later stage if you find a particular separate needs upgrading...take out the old and bring in the new separate ! Sound quality is also a big plus :-)

I suggest you look at wharfedale diamond speakers, a pulz/nad stereo amp, pioneer dvd 366 or maybe a sony, teac/denon cassette deck. BTW Sony India has introduced an AVR for 15k with a years warranty. I heard it, forget the model number but wasnt bad for entry level at all. Denon avr's would make better entry level products which can be procured at a very nice price at any PROFX shop.

Hi Manek,

Have you heard about the brand Woodstock, I am using it for the past 4 years and am satisfied with the performance.

But a new pair of woodstock floor standers are going to cost me approx 10K, do we have some decent book shelf or floor standers available at this price.

How much would a NAD or Pulz amp cost and whats the RMS wattage (i am not sure but I think my woodstock amp has 140 RMS per channel).

hi, I have heard of woodstock.
A good bookshelf for 12k would be wharfedale diamond 8.2.

nad entry level amp is a nad 320bee at 60watts rms per channel costing approx 20k. pulz is I think the same power rating od maybe more and costs 15k. But nad is far superior to indian solid state amps like sonodyne, pulz, norge, woodstock, etc.....and has high current capability.

Remember one never uses 140 watts at home. It all depends on how cleanly your amps deliver the rated power and current.
