I needed to know about cables in general. what characteristics to look for?

The articles that ARJ referred to is very basic. I need to know how the cables can affect the performance of the system. What are good brands for cables? What about optical connections? And whatever else you find relevant.

But at the beginning any entry level QED,Van De Hul, Monster,Tara labs etc should be good. In fact my experience with 12-14 gauge copper cables have also been good as speaker cables..but that depends on the current requireent of your speakers.

most of the expensive cables apparently show "results" only with expensive equipment. as long as a oftern used thumb rule of 10% of system cost on cables is kept you should be happy..

Arj is right about the entry level stuff from QED, VDH etc.

Each cable manufacturer says his cables are the best. Its how these cables gel with your system is what counts.

Analogue Cables are usually made out of oxygen free copper(OFC), silver coated copper, silver, carbon and recently I was reading GOLD !.

Digital coaxial cables are usually copper with a 75ohm impedance, digital optical cables are glass and plastic.

The OFC and the silver coated OFC are good and probably affordable. People say that the sonics of a OFC and a silver coated copper cables are different, they are too but you must choose what sound good with your own system and to your ears. You have to try them out first before deciding.

To summarize it says that most cables work the same in most circumstances. And it made sense to me as his argument is based on principle of physics and subjective experiences of some Double Blind Trials.

So I have chosen the so called "entry level" cables from Monster.

I do appreciate your help.
