Interesting article. How much freq dependent sensitivity variation is there for person to person ? If there is a wide variation the whole Hifi audition takes on a different perspective

frequency is different from sensitivity... everything fades off as age goes on...so enjoy before you cross 45+

I am talking about the freq v/s perceived amplitude curve, not the hearing of freq extremes. The variation in midrange hearing can alter the sound balance from person to person. I am looking for info on this subject. May be the brain applies a correction curve for this hearing anomaly.

you are so right Ani. that is the only reason why perceive differently.,

our ears can be thought of "reverse" transducers of speakers ie converting audiowaves back to electrical signals and hence each ear(drum) having its own characteristics (and sensitivity) which changes with time

to quote simply
The curves are lowest in the range from 1 to 5 kHz, with a dip at 4 kHz, indicating that the ear is most sensitive to frequencies in this range. The intensity level of higher or lower tones must be raised substantially in order to create the same impression of LOUDNESS.

some info here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fletcher-Munson_curves

and info galore on google

BUt below 100Hz the tactile influence of Sound gets stronger hence our whole body complements the ear as a hearing organ..tonality of this influence is of course irrelevant

and elephants can rumble at various frequencies under 20hz and have been known to have a conversation with other heards or lost elephants across vast distances, like dolphins, they too have a sound code...source animal planet. Some recordings have been made but alas cant be heard in its full glory...

1Hz
Now thats what I call frequency extension !

Some of the animal senses are just unbelievable, far far beyond human capabilities....but thats another story.

I guess tigers would laugh at all our hi end systems, and label them as very limited LF Extn gear!
Even Wilson Alexandria's/Siltech Pantheons would be like bookshelf Spks for them!

so true.. apparently even giraffes converse only under 20hz ! and we all thought they were always silent.

them long necks actually provide for a transmission line for low freqs !!

in fact thats one reason why animals "sense" danger like earthquakes..they hear the low freq which we miss out on !

thats new to me..thanks....

there may be so many animals with this ability...and we do believe that they are dumb ? I guess not....

Amazing....!
