yo TJ.
how u doing dude.
well, i can easily relate to ur woes after listening to the onkyo sub myself. awful is all i can say.
and rightfully, so was the space sub.
u can get a decent sub for 20k but nothing earth shattering.
BTW see if u can drop by my place if u can. u can take a look at definitive tech sub that i have.
has a lot of punch(the american type of louspeakers seem to do very well for me).
for 20k u can forget velodye(atlest in India),HSu,PSb and all that stuff.
take a look at def tech, Wharfedale(the new sw150), polk, Sonodyne(have not heard them, but seems like most of the forum members like them).
i actually liked the ProFX sub(don't laugh). it performed way way above the KEF(atleast in HT mode, it blew away the Kef).

I'm happy to spend 20k for sub and unlike Mr.Pani who suggested Wilson Audio for 20,000, can I ask him where is it available or does he get a special discount??.Sure I cannot afford it. But since you are so well learned and talk only about the top brands tell me what are your future hifi plans.what do u intend to buy so that members can atleast learn hifi from you.

benks will try yamaha, deftech and wharfedale.

Mr.Abhi pick up my sub I will give you a special discount and I will surely buy the $20k Wilson sub.

come on man abhi . i was actually shocked to see ur post that wilson was avialable for 20k.
i knew i was reading this wrong.
its of no use talking of top brands here unless u want to discuss abt the tech they use in their products.

so keep the wise cracks under control.

TJ,

try Polk subs mann they are really good ,priced at 9,700 for a 10" powrered sub and at 20K you'll have two subs with some money left for DVD's. .... and as i can see you have Onkyo surrounds and they match up quite good.

Ok guys,
Thats all from my side also...lets get on to solve TJ's query.
For 20k (INR) I can think of Polk, Sonodyne, Deftech, Wharfdale, Jamo and Acoustics Portrait.
Velodyne is available for around 24k.
I have not heard the Deftech and Polk but they seem to have got some good comments in this forum.
But I sincerely suggest you to check out Sonodyne if you are looking for Punch.

completely agree on the Uncle brands promotion an i really dig the term

TJ, I was told by a dealer that in the budget area Yamaha YST subs are very very VFM. try auditioning them although have never heard them

My favourite is the REL Quake. tiny with a big sound. When I last heard it was around 28 K though but Worth the money as it is very musical as well .

Prithvi,
i heard the velodyne u are speaking of but it just doesn't have the power.
and it is an 8 inch driver and won't go low enough for movies.
now if we were talking abt the cht 10 or the cht12 then that would be another matter altogetehr.
but the one u said just did not get my pulse racing in the demo scenes.

well i heard them a long time back . i think the one u have heard is the VX 10. and if Prithvi is also referring the same then that is an excellent choice too.
just as long as it is not employed in a large room.
Cheers,

well I can design a sub which will blow off see the spcs of these subs are...

12 inch subwoofers with non pressed paper cones with power ratings of 300 RMS rated into 8 ohms
Each subwoofer is made up of very heavy Magnets like double stacked 155mm magnets with total thichness of double stack will be arround 50mm

The size of the magnet is little bit less than the velodyne SPLs.

The amplifier for this is purely made up of discrete components rather than class D amps whre ( used in VELOs) they are highly efficient but not as much clarity of discrete amps.
velos saves power by 50% than mine.

So my suboofer wht I design will be 4! yes four 12 inch subwoofer which is enclosed in a 6 foot height enclosure( just like wisdom audios LFE enclosure type ).
The amplifiers for these subwoofers are externally connected instead of connecting inside the sub because sub will create very heavy vibrations so the amp shouldnt be disturbed as well as the amps will be far far cool when they are out of the enclosure. Many manufacs will fit the amp inthe enclosure to reduce the costs.

I am recommended these subwoofers 2 in numbers.... means 8 12" drivers for a room of size 40ft by 50 ft. He wants hollywood soundeffects with earthshattering bass so i am recommending this to him.

More bass means what?

Higher SPL ? thats it? nope if u want to feel the deep bass from the movies then you need to have massive amounts of air to be driven in the room.

For him the current ratings only for the subwoofer will draw about 80 amperes!!!!!!!!!

But may cost just in Rs 70,000 range.

what do u love this kind of sub?

according to the calculations its crossing the 120db out of room if you take room gain into considerisation it will cross about 126 to 128db!!!! depending upon the placement

Mate 70k is way above my budget. at 20k I have not many choices. as i liked the Polk audio sub at 9.7 k , will buy 2 each with 10" driver and 50 watt amp.enough to hear arnold fart his harley out of the tunnel.

first tell me your taste.. iwill suggest the sub...for some little bit more pirce may be...
