Hi !

For last few days I was trying hard to figure out which ten CDs to take along and which to leave behind ... to "travel light" to this "island" ....

I can't decide...no not which ones to take...but which ones to leave behind...

So I have decided to pack the following:

-Worldspace radio with 5 years subscription to "Gold Pack"
-A pack of long-life solar batteries

Guys please forgive me for breaking the rules. But please understand my plight... I will surely take along Beethoven, but I'm not willing to leave behind "Bunty and Bubbly". 30 days a month I like to hear "serious good music" but on the 31st day I have to hear something outlandish - because I feel so - and man there are 7 months in a year which have 31 days.

My dad got me hooked to the voice of Talat Mehmood & Begum Akhtar and my kids really made me enjoy "Dhoom", "Main Hoon Na", "Bunty & Bubbly", "Hanuman", etc. My mother tuned me into bhajans by Hari Om Sharan and my friends took me on the path of Hard Rock. I may have liked Western Classical of my own accord but wife really blackmailed me into liking "Romantic Songs". Not to forget that my nation beckons me to march to the tunes of patriotic songs and my Punjabi roots to its folk. And being "experimenting" that I am, there is a lot of "miscellaneous" stuff that I possess.

You see there are emotions attached with all genres of music. How can I pick one in favor of the other ? There IS so much to hear.....

BTW what equipment will you hear your Ten CDs on ?

Don't you worry, Kamal & myself are planning an audiophile meeting on this "island". Come over for a party

Yup... I'm a big fan of porcupine tree too. I like some of the other heavier opeth stuff(Orchid, Still Life, Blackwater Park) too but somehow I've always felt that their softer songs are better than the heavier ones :).

Django Reinhardt --------

Good god you have to hear him play to belive that it is possible to play acoustic guitar like that. It is sad that most of the recordings are poor

Well you can't expect recordings between 1910-1955 to be audiophile grade can you. I'm happy that atlease we have recordings of this musical genius :).

hi WTF is audiophile grade, I know only good and bad recordings at the extremes, like the tasty food you eat and the following day business. Choose accordingly. Better technology has resulted in better mastering and get you closer to reality. It's our right to get good recording and why term it as audiophilic and give credit to some as*h*les who coined this term. Let all recordings be this good, makes more sense to me.

I think I like this idea the most...kudos to you for out of the "jewel case" thinking !

problem of choosing 10 cds is which 10 especially when mood dictates music !

What you say is true in an ideal world. Sadly this is not an ideal world. Recording quality is driven by the demand – supply equation and it is only audiophiles who want good quality recordings. Liking of the word “audiophile” is a personal choice and I don’t want to comment on it. You can coin some other word for it but they will all mean the same. I like the existing word so I shall use it. All music lovers are not audiophiles. Music lovers who are not audiophiles do not give a damn about the quality of the recording. So why should all recordings be “good” if the market does not demand it ? They will just use the so called “better technology” to tailor the sound to make it sound good on “ low fi” systems. That is where the money is…………so it does not need much thinking to figure out why there are very few good recordings out there.

Hi Vinny, Hmm this discusion this taking an intersting turn into economics of demand and supply... The more they make the more we "audiophiles" will buy. ..I'm not bothered about rest of world or music lovers who are happy with Ipod's, tiny FM receievers or airport display boom boxes.. just better recording in atleast all rock albums, country and ofcourse jazz...This is my grouse as I have against Indian manufacturers except some hardcore genuine guys like Viren ... I don't mind paying extra but get more albums in good recording and we will come forward to buy..My personal experience got a gold series of amy all time fave scorpions to find it sounds horrible...Now it sings in my car , where originally it was supposed to in my home audio and i enjoy music at leisure..Again IMHO ofcourse

Hmm and talking of coining a diffrent term lets seek help from deaf.

No Sir if you want audiophile let it be and I will be an audioenthusiast. In the end it's all supposed to be music.

Not in any order:
1) Jean Luc ponty (Fusion in violin)
2) Jesus Christ Superstar ( Rock opera)
3) Smokie -greatest hits
4) Eagles - greatest hits
5) Dire Straits
6) Weather report (Fusion)
7) Deep Purple
Pink Floyd
9) Chick Corea (Fusion)
10) Simon And Garfunkle.

All those great artists heard long ago during college days, in Casette Tapes inspired by my great friend. I would like to hear them again (nostalgic)

I was lucky to see two live programs at Mumbai: one by Deep Purple ( Brought by BPL) in 1995 and the other by Jean Luc Ponty (Brought by Johnny Walker) in 2004 if my memory is correct. The Deep Purple program was accused to be Lip-concert where as other was Magnificent (Naturally with free Johny walker flowing at Bandra Auditorium !)

Even LPs are mentioned, but no DVDs? Whatever happened to the visual component

I usually listen to songs, not CDs (all songs on an album are rarely equal), but the following should be a good list of great music.

DVDs:
1. Andre Rieu: Christmas in Vienna [for life, energy, and spirit of the conductor]
2. Melbourne Musical Extravaganza [great guitar playing by relatively unknown musicians]
3. Norah Jones (live in Nashville, Texas) [great singer & pianist backed by a good band]

CDs:
1. Diana Krall: Live in Paris [what a voice, and backed by a great band]
2. Dire Straits: Brothers in Arms [superlative guitar playing]
3. Dido: Life for Rent [love her voice, to hell with the background]
4. Bruce Springsteen: The Rising [love his vocals pregnant with emotion]
5. Mark Knopfler: Sailing to Philadelphia [great vocals and guitar]
6. Roland Deveze: Listen with your Heart [fantastic piano play]
7. Selection of Connie Francis CD2 [love her voice]
